Talking about su***de openly and honestly is one of the most important things we can do. But the language we use matters.

Some phrases, even well-meaning ones, can reinforce the stigma that still surrounds su***de. And stigma is one of the biggest barriers to someone asking for help.

Small changes in the way we talk about su***de can make a real difference. To the young person who hears it. To the family member who reads it. To the culture we're all part of.

Here are a few phrases worth knowing...

If you're worried about a young person or struggling yourself, HopeLine 24/7 is here for you.

Tonight is the night! šŸ§€

The first partnership between HelloHope and will see ā€˜Nibbles & Natter’ commence at the Adelphi, Leeds at 6pm to enjoy a selection of cheese in good company with all profits supporting our continued work šŸ’–

Why do we run events like this?

Of course mental health and su***de prevention are serious subjects - su***de remains the leading cause of death in all people under 35 and men under 50 years old - and su***des continue to increase - this is the harsh reality - however we refuse to lead from a scaremongering place.

Stigma is still rife which means people suffer in silence and lives are lost - so we’re changing the narrative to come from a place of hope.

There’s a lot to be hopeful about - whilst couldn’t save her dad and lives already lost to su***de - we know most su***des are preventable - if only we can all get better at talking about it, understanding the signs that most people show (consciously and unconsciously - and not always what you’d expect) and feel confident and equipped to safely intervene and get the person to safety.

This is what our training does - sadly demand isn’t as strong as I’d like so we teach people via talks and regular events to help increase awareness and erode the stigma.

Holding uplifting events - like Nibbles & Natter, our monthly netwalks (next one is 28th April 10am at Golden Acre Park) our upcoming Hope Awards and - helps make these vital conversations easier - gradually reducing stigma and of course funding our continued work.

We’re so grateful to people who join us on this journey - and try to make this tough area as palatable as possible - and what’s more palatable than cheese! šŸ§€ šŸ˜‹

See you soon for a Brie-liant evening! šŸ§€

Meet train driver Helen Donagher who saved the life of a woman who jumped in front of her train 😰

The 38-year-old, who had only been qualified for three months, started her shift at around 6.30am on a dark January morning last year.

As she was pulling out of the station, something caught her Helen's eye.

She said: "The first thing I thought was 'that's a funny place to walk' and then all of a sudden I heard a big thud but I didn't know exactly what had happened."

When Helen looked on the CCTV she saw a person on the tracks.

She said: "I stopped the train, made sure everything was safe, made sure the train was secure and the passengers couldn't get off, I made sure the line manager knew and the line was blocked and I got off the train.

"Initially, I thought the person might have fallen and asked what she was doing down there and that is when she told me she wanted to get hit by the train."

Helen called emergency services and stayed with the woman who had broken bones until they arrived.

She said: "I was of course relieved that the person was still alive but I was of course shocked.

"I just remember it felt like forever waiting for the paramedics, I don't think it was, they dealt with it really quickly and efficiently but in that moment I was just hoping they got there soon.

"I was so relieved when I saw them, it was quite dark as it was early in the morning, I was shining in my torch so that they could see where we were."

When the paramedics arrived, Helen moved the train to give them access to the patient.

She said: "There were broken bones and bruising but thankfully the person did make a full recovery and hopefully went on to get the support she needed.

"You go into the job knowing things like this are a possibility but it was a shock that it happened so soon into my career."

Helen has been honoured with a star on the walkway at York Station and the LNER Lifesaver Award for what she did.

Amazing work Helen ā¤ļøšŸ™Œ
