At the moment, we don't know why women's brains are more vulnerable to dementia and Alzheimer's than our male counterparts, or who those vulnerable people are.

Ageing and lifestyle play a role in both sexes, but why are some women more likely to get it than others?

Is it simply a drop in oestrogen, or is it only those who have severe vasomotor symptoms who are at higher risk?

We don't know, but more research would help us find out, and every pound spent could help prevent the distressing human cost and reduce its economic cost.

Menopause affects an estimated 13 million women in the UK, only 0.3% of the NIHR's ยฃ1.25 billion health research budget was allocated to menopause research, resulting in just 6 out of 852 funded studies.

This funding gap does not reflect a lack of need; rather, it highlights misplaced priorities. Without adequate research, progress is hindered, evidence remains limited, and millions of women are left to navigate menopause without the understanding and support they deserve.

Raising awareness is important, but taking action is essential for driving change. Share this post, support advocacy efforts, sign petitions, and contribute to the funding of the research that has been overlooked for far too long.

This is why the Menopause Research and Education Foundation (MREF) exists. โฌ‡๏ธ

Itโ€™s estimated that 1 in 10 women quit work due to menopause symptoms, and the cost to the economy from time off or reduced productivity at work is estimated at ยฃ1.5bn annually. This is not just a health issue. It is a crisis affecting businesses across every sector: workforce, leadership, productivity, and policy.

Too many women are forced to reduce hours, step back from leadership roles, or leave work entirely because menopause symptoms remain under-researched, underfunded, and poorly supported.

At the peak of their careers, experienced women are being pushed out of the workforce, even though the right research, treatment, education, and workplace support could help them stay.

Funding menopause research is not optional; it is an economic investment. Better research leads to better care, stronger workplaces, improved retention, and healthier lives.

This is preventable. Fund the research. ๐Ÿ‘‡
