Wheel Escapes

Wheel Escapes We’re a husband-and-wife team, both living with disabilities, sharing no-nonsense reviews of accessible holidays. Welcome.

We’re a husband-and-wife team, both disabled, and passionate about accessible travel that actually works for real people. We created Wheel Escapes because too many “accessible” holidays aren’t. So we’re on a mission to review and share honest, first-hand experiences — from hotel stays to cruises, flights to city breaks. We don’t sugar-coat and we speak from lived experience. Whether you travel regularly or dream of a future trip, we’re here to help make accessible holidays less of a gamble.

Are you currently in an area with a hosepipe ban in place?
Did you know, you may be exempt from this ban?

Neither did I.

Quote from My London:

"Customers who are on the priority services register, water sure tariff are exempt from the hosepipe ban, along with blue badge holders. This applies to some older customers, some with disabilities, and those on Universal Credit, Income Support, or Child Tax Credit.

Although these customers are not required to comply with the ban, they are still asked to avoid using water where possible. Residents who have newly laid turf are also allowed to water their lawn with a hosepipe for 28 days after it's been laid.

The same rules apply when you have recently sown grass seed. Contractors are permitted to use water for essential building activities, such as mixing cement, but not for cleaning paths or equipment."

I recommend contacting your water supply company for confirmation.

Hamburg Airport Assistance - The PITS!!!!

I thought I was heading home after an amazing trip to Germany. Instead, my journey through Hamburg Airport became one of the worst travel experiences I've ever had.

As a full-time electric wheelchair user, I was forced to hand over my wheelchair long before boarding and use an unsuitable airport wheelchair. Unlike every other airport I've travelled through, I wasn't allowed to stay in my own wheelchair until the aircraft door.

The problems only escalated from there. Poor assistance, inaccessible facilities, confusion over my wheelchair's whereabouts, and a complete lack of disability awareness turned an already stressful journey into a painful one.

During boarding, my legs were repeatedly grabbed, trapped and crushed while staff transferred me into the aircraft, leaving me bruised, in severe pain, and in tears by the time I reached my seat. To make matters worse, my wheelchair and suitcase was also returned damaged.

For disabled people, our wheelchairs are not luggage—they are our independence.

I'll soon be sharing the full story on Wheel Escapes, explaining exactly what happened and why airports must do far better for disabled passengers. But before I do that, I am trying to get a response from BA, Hamburg Airport and the German Red Cross, who are contracted for Airport Assistance.

Have you had a terrible experience with Airport Assistance?

We wheelchair users know the anxiety we have when flying and whether we will see our wheelchairs in one piece when we land.

Handing over your independence to complete strangers is a very hard thing to do.

Do you know what to do if your wheelchair doesn't come back to you in one piece?

For our 30th anniversary of being together, Jeff and I planned something special—a Japan cruise we booked over a year in advance to secure an accessible cabin (they go fast!).

Usually, I handle all our travel plans, but this time Jeff suggested using a travel agent so everything—flights, hotel, cruise—would be covered as a package. His thinking? If anything went wrong, they’d sort it. Sounds great in theory… right?

I’ll be honest—I had reservations, as our past experiences have been more than disappointing, but we decided to go ahead and book through TUI anyway.

Biggest mistake ever.

What we didn’t realise was that TUI would pass everything over to the cruise company (Celebrity) to manage… and that’s when the problems started.

Full story coming soon 👀

Have you ever used a travel agent? What was your experience like?
