For some people it just doesn’t make any sense at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

But there are very real reasons behind these things & why they happen for someone with ADHD!

What else can we add to the list of things that don’t make sense??? 🤔

If we didn’t ever take the time in an assessment to fully understand THE REASON behind the symptoms, everyone would meet the ‘tick box criteria’ for an ADHD diagnosis 😱

A diagnostic assessment is much more than ticking box’s.

👩🏻‍⚕️It’s understanding the context
👩🏻‍⚕️It’s understanding the triggers
👩🏻‍⚕️It’s understanding their history
👩🏻‍⚕️It’s understanding their environment

& most importantly it’s understanding the person 👩🏻‍⚕️

We look at the whole picture to fully understand a person’s symptoms, not only ADHD.

We know ADHD rarely exists alone, so why ignore what else is impacting a persons quality of life.

If you are considering seeking a private assessment, choose wisely and see it as an investment in your life, future, health & wellbeing 💜

👩🏻‍⚕️There’s actually a scientific reason behind why it feels easier to complete a task under pressure…….

The stress/pressure/anxiety of an upcoming deadline increases something that an ADHD brain is lacking in (Noradrenaline) 🧠

🥴Although relying on the last minute pressure has many negative outcomes such as constant cycles of burnout and anxiety.

Things to try 👇

📆Make a false deadline - that’s earlier than the real one

🙌Ask someone else to hold you accountable to this

📔Block out time in your diary to do a specific task - like it’s an appointment, rather than trying to fit it in around other commitments.

👭Body double- ask someone to just be around to hold you accountable or if it’s a task that requires focus, can they sit and work with you?

❓What other things do you find helps you get started on a task??

It’s time to reintroduce the team behind The ADHD Nurse 💜

Let’s face it, I couldn’t do what I do alone, without the support of amazing colleagues 💕

Every person in the team plays a role in making sure our patients are well looked after from the first point of contact and on-going.

I feel incredibly lucky to have a team that truly care about what we do & anyone coming to us for help 🫶

We notice more than you think when sitting in a room with someone with ADHD. Even when someone is masking, we can spot the symptoms 👀

👩🏻‍⚕️An assessment is more than just a set of questions about ADHD, it’s observing the person in the room, how they act, respond, communicate & how this changes once they relax & let their guard down 💜

Which ones do you relate to??

The simple answer is anything you fancy, anything is better than nothing!!…….This is important to remember if you struggle with appetite suppression when taking stimulant medications.

However, there are certain food groups which are better for regulating your energy levels & that will further support your cognitive functioning throughout the day.

🍗🌰🥚Protein, protein & more protein!

Protein can help regulate your blood sugars throughout the day, which many people struggle with when taking medications and not eating enough.

It’s also known to help with dopamine production, which will further help with focus and motivation 🤩

Healthy fats 🥑🐟
Like nuts, seeds, avocados, oily fish
These will also help to improve your cognitive functioning

Slow release carbs 🍚
Like oats, sweet potatoes, whole grain rice
These will keep you going for longer & help regulate your energy throughout the day

When your appetite is reduced, it can feel much harder to know what to eat or what you fancy. If you can’t face a full meal, try home made smoothies, soup, protein shakes…..this is better than not eating at all.

Or snacking little & often, which can make it more manageable and not going long periods of time without eating.

I will follow up with “what to avoid when taking ADHD meds” 🧐

ADHD isn’t all negative! There are some amazing personality traits that go hand in hand with it 🤩

Now I’m not going to pretend it doesn’t exist without challenges either, but the struggles are very real for many people with ADHD.

I think I’m a perfect mix of the stigma & the reality 🤩💜

👩🏻‍⚕️Asking about the costs of treatment ahead of an assessment is perfectly ok.

👩🏻‍⚕️It’s not about ‘jumping ahead of yourself’ before you have even been assessed, let alone diagnosed with ADHD. It’s about ensuring that treatment options are affordable if you go down the private assessment route & ‘if’ you are diagnosed following your assessment.

It’s not to say that a diagnosis alone isn’t helpful, because it absolutely is. Medication isn’t suitable for everyone & may not be needed or even safe in some cases. So the cost of medication may be irrelevant for some.

But knowing what to expect following a diagnosis is important & something we try to be as transparent as possible about.

Shared care is still possible with some GP’s, but not as often as it used to be. So knowing what it would cost you to access treatment privately & any on going costs involved, is something that you need to know before making any commitments.
