She'd lived in the same part of the city as me for three years.

I had no idea.

We spent twenty minutes working out which streets we both knew, which café had the best pastries, which bit of the park was worth the walk.

I went in as her Care Professional. I came out with a recommendation for a deli I'd never heard of and a new view of a place I thought I already knew.

He still knows everyone.

The woman who runs the bakery. The bloke who walks the retriever. Half the people at the Saturday market by name.

He's been part of this place for forty years, and he's not done yet.

A little support just means he can still get out there. Still have those conversations. Still be the person he's always been in his own neighbourhood.

Essential Care Professional skills (according to no official body, but definitely true):

Knowing when to talk and when to just make a good cup of tea and listen.

Being able to find something genuinely interesting in almost any conversation.

Not minding who wins at dominoes.

Knowing which topics will get someone talking for an hour.

Navigating confidently between "they want company" and "they want quiet".

Remembering what someone told you last week because it mattered to them.

None of these are in the training manual. All of them matter.
