Empowered Conversations

Empowered Conversations Empowered Conversations helps families affected by dementia to stay well, to stay connected and to stay together for longer.

Caring for people living with dementia is not easy, and can create frustrations for all involved. We want to Empower families to live as well as they can with dementia. Improving connections, increasing understanding, encouraging curiosity and focusing on self care can make a huge difference. The team provides communication courses and one to one dementia focused therapeutic support for family car

ers in Greater Manchester. Dr Phil McEvoy developed our first course, ‘Empowered Conversations’, in 2014 to improve communication and relationships between people living with dementia and their families. The course helps people to listen, learn and stay connected. It encourages people to get curious and try different ways to communicate. We have a follow on course, Moving Beyond Words, for when words become trickier to understand and use. We work with the wonderful Dr Maggie Ellis to offer a third course, Adaptive Interactions, around connecting with family members who have advanced dementia. We raise grant funding so that courses are free for families living in Greater Manchester. We run courses for professionals as well, starting with a 2 hour introduction to dementia and communication workshop. We expect groups to pay for these courses. The one to one support offers regular and flexible sessions for carers on the phone or via zoom. Sessions offer time to unload, reflect, consider different approaches, accept and think about self care. This approach is based on the New York University Caregiver Intervention, research showed this delayed the move into full time care by 557 days. We have a carers voice monthly group who are passionate about sharing their stories to bring about positive change for others. We also run a monthly bereavement group for v carers we have worked with

“I’m a woman, I’m a daughter, I’m somebody’s sister. I’m a wife as well. I’ve got the label of a teacher…”

In our latest blog, we share the story of one woman caring for someone with dementia, exploring the impact caring can have on your identity, relationships, work and sense of self.

As part of our ongoing campaign looking at the different sides of caring for someone with dementia, she shares honestly what it can feel like to take on the role of a carer while still trying to be all the other things that make you who you are.

"Imagine if we treated somebody diagnosed with cancer in that way." - Baroness Casey, Chair of the Independent Commission on Adult Social Care.

We think about that frequently.

As people who have cared for someone with Lewy body dementia, many of us sadly have a unique insight into the many ways in which adult social care is failing our loved ones.

The Prime Minister has asked Baroness Casey to consider how adult social care should change to meet the needs of current and future generations, and to make recommendations for reform.

In response, she has opened The Big Conversation on Care, an opportunity to share our lived expertise on what is needed.

Please get involved, without our evidence they cannot possibly understand what it is really like: https://caseycommission.co.uk/bigconversation/

Sharing a BBC Radio 4 Women's Hour talking about the impact on adult children caring for parents. What's your experience of this?

As our population ages, there will be more people in their 60s caring for older parents, and an increase in the number of those working while struggling to juggle unpaid care responsibilities.

Our Charity Director, Caroline Abrahams, spoke about caring responsibilities and the impact on adult children on BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour. Listen here: https://bit.ly/3UbybcF

If you missed Claire and Kay on ITV News on Wednesday, here's their story and why they are hopeful about the proposed changes to Adult Social Care. It will only work if the parties come together on this, it can't be a place to score political points, it has to be a commitment to change a system that is failing families, staff and piling pressure on the NHS.

The world is full of models that work, models that support huge populations of over 65s and models from countries with the happiest older people in the world. We don't need to reinvent it. We just need to pick one and get behind it.

A preventative approach where we offer earlier support for families affected by dementia to support them to stay well, stay connected and stay together for longer saves money, avoids crisis and keeps the whole family well.
