✋ Volunteers’ Week 2026 ✋

🤩This week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who give their time, energy, and passion to make a difference to the Manchester Deaf Community.

🤝 Our volunteers support a wide range of activities at MDC: from youth events and jobs fairs to BSL translation, reception cover, wellbeing walks, health workshops, and more. They make a real impact every day.

Highlights this year include:

⭐Welcoming volunteers Kim and Maham into our Services team as staff members, showing how volunteering builds the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a specialised work environment.

⭐ Supporting student placement Beth, who showed an inspiring transformation by developing confidence, workplace skills, and communication. It’s been fantastic to see her continue volunteering and staying connected.

⭐ Volunteer fundraisers Lisa, Michelle and Anna raised £3,000 through running and hiking challenges this year. Incredible! We’d love to see more fundraising initiatives like this.

🙌 Thank you to all our amazing volunteers—you make everything we do possible.

📌 We currently have a healthy waiting list and are not accepting new volunteer applications at this time. Thank you for the continued interest and support.

Great to see our BSL Taster Sessions already up and running in Salford Quays with our teacher Sarah! 👏

Sessions have been running in small rotating groups of four, helping create a relaxed and supportive environment for beginners to learn basic British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness skills.

Fantastic engagement so far and we’re looking forward to seeing the groups continue to build their confidence in BSL!

👀See the Sound! Play the Music! 🎵

We are so happy to share a video from our recent music workshop with Wellbeing Group at Manchester Deaf Centre.

🥁This Deaf-led, inclusive music workshop created by Noa Nishizawa in collaboration with Manchester Deaf Centre and Johanna Leung explored how music can be experienced beyond traditional listening. Through rhythm, vibration, movement, and visual communication, participants came together to co-create and experience music in new and meaningful ways.

🎼Designed for Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants (including those with no previous musical experience), the session aimed to create a welcoming, accessible space for everyone to engage with music creatively.

✨Noa told us "Thank you all once again for your incredible support throughout the planning and delivery of the workshop. Looking back through the footage and feedback really reminded me how special the session was, and I truly could not have made this happen without all of your support, encouragement, and collaboration."
