🤝 Taking Support into the Community – EHF at Gorton Hub 🤝

At Ethnic Health Forum, we believe that support should be accessible to everyone.

That's why our team regularly visits community venues such as Gorton Hub to meet local residents, provide welfare rights advice, carry out needs assessments, and help people access the services and support they need.

For many community members, particularly those with limited English language skills, navigating services can be challenging. Our team helps break down these barriers by providing culturally sensitive support, information, guidance, and signposting to appropriate services.

Community engagement is at the heart of what we do. We understand that not everyone can easily attend our offices, so we take our services into the community to ensure that help is available where it is needed most.

Our walking project is about much more than physical activity. It is about bringing people together, reducing social isolation, building confidence, creating new friendships, and supporting wellbeing in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

A unique part of our walks is the opportunity to learn and practise English vocabulary with your park Buddy.

As we explore nature, local landmarks, and community spaces, participants can build their confidence in speaking English, learn new words, and improve their communication skills in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Alex Walter from The University of Manchester to discuss opportunities for collaboration on research projects aimed at improving NHS General Practice services.

During the meeting, we shared Ethnic Health Forum's experience of working with and supporting ethnic minority communities across Manchester and Salford.

As both a GP and a researcher, Dr Walter showed great interest in our work and shared insights into his upcoming research projects. Together, we explored how research ideas can be transformed into practical solutions that make a real difference to the communities we serve.

The discussion was enriched by sharing lived experiences and case studies from our community work, highlighting the challenges faced by ethnic minority communities and the opportunities to improve access, engagement, and health outcomes.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and working together to turn ideas into action that can benefit local communities and strengthen primary care services.

EHF was proud to take part in The “Deeper Democracy” event, held on 21 May and co-hosted by GM Humanity Project, Co-operation Manchester, and the Campaign for a GM Citizens’ Assembly which brought together community members and stakeholders to explore ways of strengthening democratic participation beyond traditional elections.

Through interactive discussions and group activities, participants shared ideas focused on building more inclusive, community-led governance structures. Key themes included the development of neighbourhood and citizens’ assemblies, the use of creative engagement methods such as legislative theatre and creative listening, and the importance of community empowerment and accountability. There was also strong emphasis on tackling social issues like loneliness, promoting community cohesion, and creating spaces for meaningful participation.

Additional discussions highlighted the need for education and training, sustainable funding, and stronger partnerships between communities and public institutions.

Overall, the event fostered collaboration, generated practical recommendations, and reinforced the importance of participatory democracy as a foundation for and social change.
