Things I’ve learned from having a “broken back” all week…

Putting your socks on is an advanced athletic skill.

Sneezing is an extreme sport.

Your nervous system has a lot to say about pain.

Being a therapist does not make you remotely patient when you’re the patient.

I’ve spent years telling people, “Keep moving, don’t panic, it will settle.” Turns out that advice is much easier to give than receive.

After a week bent over, being able to stand straight again is now genuinely one of my life goals.

I would willingly sacrifice my life savings for snake oil if it had a whiff of working.

Slowly improving. Still a bit wonky.

Erectile dysfunction is common.

It’s also something loads of men put up with for years before doing anything about it.

There are a few potential causes, but for appropriate cases, particularly vascular ED, focused shockwave therapy is one of the treatment options available.

We use medical-grade focused shockwave from STORZ Medical, with treatment carried out discreetly in clinic. The shockwaves help to destroy the plaque that forms inside pe**le arteries and encourage new blood vessel formation.

Just another service we offer that a lot of people probably don’t realise we do or can help.

Bit of a mix in the diary this week…

Initial assessments, event prep sports massage, VO₂ max test, chronic back and neck pain, knee follow ups and some maintenance sessions.

Shockwave sessions for plantar heel pain, GTPS, Achilles pain, rotator cuff tendinopathy and tennis elbow.

Men’s health / ED and a peyronies shockwave treatment.

And a day off! 🥳

Progressive overload, family edition 😂

Belt squats to finish the legs off apparently some of the kids decided the stack wasn’t quite heavy enough.

Actually a pretty decent way to finish a session: load the legs hard without loading up the back. Enjoy the stairs tomorrow

It’s never too late to invest in your future health!

Last week we tested this clinets VO₂ max to find out exactly where his fitness is now, establish a baseline and work out the right training zones to build from.

He is also going to be tracking body composition along the way, so we can see how improving fitness and gradually reducing body fat work together to improve long-term health.

Higher aerobic fitness is linked with a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and many other chronic illnesses.

If it sounds scary the best bit is you don’t have to train like an Olympic athlete to benefit, just a few consistent simple sessions give you a great return on investment in you health.

Know your starting point. Train smarter. Measure your progress.

Menopause isn’t just hot flushes... it can affect your muscles, joints and tendons too.

Many women notice that around the time of menopause they suddenly develop aches and pains they’ve never had before.

This is sometimes referred to as the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause.

Common symptoms include:•

Stiff joints, especially first thing in the morning
• Tendon pain (Achilles, tennis elbow, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis, gluteal tendinopathy)
• Muscle aches and tightness
• Reduced strength and muscle mass
• Slower recovery after exercise
• Increased risk of tendon injuries
• Recurrent “niggles” that don’t seem to settle
• Reduced bone density and increased risk of stress injuries

Why?
As oestrogen levels fall, it affects collagen production, tendon health, muscle repair, inflammation and bone turnover. The result is that tissues often become less resilient and take longer to recover from the same activities you’ve always done.

Where can shockwave help?

Shockwave doesn’t “treat menopause” but it can be an excellent option for many of the tendon and soft tissue problems that become more common during this stage of life.

Research suggests it can help:
✔ Stimulate tissue healing
✔ Improve tendon remodelling
✔ Reduce pain
✔ Improve function
✔ Help stubborn conditions that haven’t responded to rest alone or injections

The best results usually come from combining shockwave with the right strengthening programme, load management and, where appropriate, discussions with your GP about wider menopausal management.

If you’ve suddenly found that running, the gym or even walking has become more painful than it used to be, don’t just assume it’s “getting older”. There is often a reason and there are treatments that can help.

Lee came in last week for a VO₂ max test.

He’s recently started running and wanted to know exactly where his training zones were to make sure his training was as effective as it could be, understand what training effect he was getting at different paces, and hopefully reduce the chances of injury by not doing every run too hard.

The nice thing with VO₂ testing is you take the guesswork out of it.

We found:
• His VO₂ max - giving us a great baseline fitness score.
• His Zone 2.
• His lactate threshold.
• His heart rate and pace training zones.

So now he knows exactly what pace and heart rate to aim for depending on the goal of the session.

Easy runs to build his aerobic base and improve fat burning.

Threshold runs to improve the pace he can hold before fatiguing.

Intervals to improve his VO₂ max and top-end fitness.

Rather than every run becoming the same pace, each session now has a purpose.

The other big advantage is we’ve got a proper benchmark. We can repeat the test in 6-12 months and see exactly how much his fitness has improved rather than relying on estimates from a watch.

You definitely don’t have to be a pro to have a VO₂ max test either.

It’s just as useful if you’ve recently started running, want to train for your first race, improve your cycling, prepare for Hyrox or simply want to improve your health and fitness. Knowing your own physiology means you can train smarter, recover better and make the most of the time you spend exercising.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re training at the right intensity, or just want to know how fit you really are, get in touch.

💡Most men think there are only two options for erectile dysfunction:
1. Tablets
2. Just live with it

BUT, what many don’t realise is that erectile dysfunction is often a circulation issue, and there are other treatment options.
That’s where our shockwave therapy comes in!

Low-intensity shockwave therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment designed to reduce plaque, stimulate blood vessel formation and improve circulation in the pelvic region. Rather than masking symptoms, it focuses on the underlying vascular cause.
It’s:
⭐ Drug-free
⭐ Non-surgical
⭐ Performed in clinic
Used worldwide in men’s health and urology clinics

For the right candidate, it can be a genuinely effective way to address the root cause that many men simply don't know about.

If you’ve ever thought:
“There must be something better than relying on tablets” then this may be worth learning about.
