📚 Can hair loss really skip a generation?

It can certainly look that way but the genetics behind male pattern hair loss are much more complicated than simply passing baldness from one generation to the next.

Male pattern hair loss is polygenic, meaning multiple genetic variants can influence your susceptibility and despite the common myth that baldness comes from your mother’s side, relevant genetics can be inherited from both sides of your family.

That’s why two brothers can experience completely different levels of hair loss, or why your grandfather might have experienced significant hair loss while your dad hasn’t, yet you still develop it.

Your family history can give you clues about your risk, but it can’t tell you exactly whether you’ll lose your hair, when it might begin or how far it could eventually progress.

Your family tree isn’t a prediction of your future hairline.

One of my favourite things about travelling is the people you meet along the way.

New places, different cultures, different ways of doing things and conversations with people I’d probably never have crossed paths with otherwise.

A lot of the opportunities and relationships I’ve built over the last few years have come from simply being willing to travel, meet people face to face and see things for myself.

I think that’s probably the part I enjoy most - Exploring somewhere new and never quite knowing who you’re going to meet or where a conversation might lead.

🚿 Does washing your hair every day cause hair loss?

No, washing your hair regularly does not cause male pattern hair loss.

What can be confusing is seeing hairs in your hands or shower after shampooing. In most cases, these are hairs that were already in the shedding phase of the hair cycle and were ready to fall.

How often you should wash your hair depends on your scalp, hair type and lifestyle but avoiding shampoo because you’re worried it’ll make you bald isn’t the answer.

If you’re noticing increased shedding, thinning or changes to your hairline, that’s when it’s worth understanding why it’s happening.

UK vs Turkey for a hair transplant & why can the price be so different?

A hair transplant in the UK can cost considerably more than travelling to Istanbul, but that doesn’t automatically mean one is better than the other.

There are some major differences between the two models.

Operating costs, staff wages and property costs are generally lower in Turkey. Istanbul also has an enormous hair transplant industry, allowing many clinics to perform procedures at a much higher volume.

Another important difference is who is involved in performing the procedure.

In the UK, you’ll generally pay more for surgeon involvement. In Turkey, many clinics work with a combination of doctors and experienced technicians but the level of doctor involvement, the experience of the team and exactly who performs each stage can vary significantly between clinics.

That’s why I don’t believe the conversation should simply be “UK good, Turkey bad” or the other way around.

I work with clinics in both the UK and Istanbul because they’re different options for different clients.

The country and the price are only part of the decision.

Who is actually performing your procedure, their experience, the medical oversight and how your transplant is planned are far more important questions to ask.

📚 A lower hairline might look appealing today but will it still make sense 10 or 20 years from now?

Hairline design is about much more than simply recreating the hairline you had when you were younger.

The lower you bring a hairline, the larger the area that needs to be covered and the more grafts you may need to create adequate density.

And those grafts come from a limited donor supply.

If your native hair continues to recede or thin in the future, you may need that donor hair again. Using too much of it chasing an unnecessarily low hairline can limit your options later.

A well planned hairline should complement your face, account for your age and hair loss pattern, and still look appropriate as you get older.

The question shouldn’t be “How low can we go?”

It should be “What hairline makes sense for the long term?”

👥👥 The Istanbul Group Trips are designed for men who want the benefits of having their hair transplant in Turkey, but would rather not navigate the experience alone.

We meet at Manchester Airport and travel to Istanbul together. I’m then there throughout the trip, accompanying you to the clinic, supporting you through the consultation and planning process, and making sure you know exactly what to expect at each stage.

The clinic, accommodation and transfers are all arranged, so rather than trying to organise everything yourself in a country you may never have visited before, you have someone experienced there with you throughout the process.

You still receive an individual hair transplant plan based on your own hair loss, donor area and long term needs. The difference is that you’re making the journey alongside others going through the same experience.

For anyone considering a hair transplant in Turkey but feeling unsure about making the trip alone, that’s exactly what these trips were created for.

📘 More grafts doesn’t automatically mean a denser-looking hair transplant.

Hair density and visual density are two different things.

Two men could receive a similar number of grafts and end up with very different-looking coverage. That’s because the final appearance is influenced by much more than the graft count.

Hair thickness, curl, colour, contrast with the scalp, the number of hairs within each graft, the area being covered and how those grafts are distributed can all affect how dense the result actually looks.

This is why I don’t believe a hair transplant should be judged simply by “How many grafts am I getting?”

A bigger number isn’t automatically a better result.

It’s about understanding the individual’s hair characteristics and using their available grafts intelligently.

📚Can a receding hairline actually grow back?

The answer depends heavily on how far the hair loss has progressed.

If hairs around the hairline are still present but becoming finer, shorter and weaker through miniaturisation, treatment may help protect the existing hair and, in some men, improve the thickness of those miniaturised hairs.

But if the temples or hairline have been slick bald for a long time, medication is far less likely to recreate the hairline that was once there. In these cases, a hair transplant may be required if restoration is the goal.

This is why recognising hair loss early matters.

The more hair you still have, the more there may be to protect.

Before deciding on treatment or jumping straight into a hair transplant, first understand what’s actually happening to your hair.

✈️ If you’re travelling to Istanbul for a hair transplant, who you fly with can make a difference to the experience.

Whenever possible, I recommend flying with Turkish Airlines.

I’ve travelled to Istanbul numerous times and they’ve consistently been an excellent airline - good service, comfortable flights and, importantly, direct flights from Manchester to Istanbul.

When you’re travelling for a procedure, especially on the journey home, comfort and convenience matter.

It’s one of the reasons I recommend them to my clients and use them myself whenever possible.

A hair transplant journey isn’t just about what happens inside the clinic. The whole experience matters from the moment you leave the UK until you arrive back home.
