Why do we keep finding ourselves here?
You promise yourself you’ll stop saying yes when you mean no.
Then someone asks a favour, “Of course” comes out of your mouth, and there goes the afternoon you’d kept for yourself.
Sometimes knowing what we ought to do is easier than understanding why we do something else.
The Ten of Wands in tarot pictures someone carrying a great armful of staffs. Looking at it, we might ask: “Are all of those his to carry?”
An image can give us a little distance from a familiar difficulty—and a question we had not thought to ask.
Caring for other people doesn’t mean we have to leave ourselves out. Perhaps a small beginning is simply: “Let me think about that and get back to you.”
Is there somewhere in your life where a pause would give you more room to choose?
This week’s website Reflection explores how tarot and stories can help us look at familiar patterns with fresh eyes.
