Your dog might benefit from a change of food if they have persistent health problems, including:
Loose stools
Constipation
Flatulance
Vomiting
Dry-heaving
Obesity
Bad breath
Stained or missing teeth
Gum disease
Dull coats
Itchy skin
Patches of missing fur
Hot spots
Ye**ty ears
Stained coat and paws
Prone to infection
Or parasite infestation
Low energy
Or constant frenzied energy
A**l gland problems
Eye problems
Joint problems
Urinary tract problems
Kidney problems
Pancreas problems
Pretty much any kind of problems...
Also, some behavioural problems can be influenced by diet, including:
Chronic stress
Anxiety
Restlessness
Lethargy
Low mood
Irritability
Reactivity
Obsessive behaviours
A dog who is generally happy and healthy (physically, mentally and behaviourally) is likely on a diet that suits them.
So if a dog isn't doing well on a particular diet, I think it's definitely worth trying something else.
Including if they are on a 'prescription' kibble. I mean, if you've tried one for a few months and the problem hasn't improved, it's not doing what it's supposed to do.
Including those very expensive boutique diets.
Including raw food diets.
You might know I'm a raw food advocate. Not least because I've seen the difference it has made, for my own dog, and for lots of others. But I'm not adamant everyone should feed their dogs raw, nor am I judgemental about those who choose not to do so.
I fully appreciate raw food is not for every dog.
Nor for every human. And I understand humans choose what to feed their dogs for a hundred different reasons, and within all kinds of limitations.
But I do think the *best* kind of diet for dogs (and humans, probably all mammals) is, simply:
✅️ Fresh
✅️ Varied
✅️ Minimally-processed
Certainly, optimal nutrition is life-changing, life-enhancing and, probably, life-extending.
So, one of the very best things we can do for our dogs is to offer them the very best diet for their own particular personal needs...
That means a diet they actually *thrive* on.
Whatever that diet might look like. 🐾💜
