Why I Sometimes Refuse Treatment – And Why That’s a Good Thing

One of the most important parts of being a Sports Massage Therapist is knowing when not to treat.

Just because someone is in pain doesn’t always mean massage is the right option. Sometimes treatment can do more harm than good, and client safety must always come first.

Last week, I declined treatment for two clients:

🔹 A semi-professional referee who had taken a cricket ball to the ankle. The area was badly bruised, swollen and still in the acute stage of healing. Massage at this stage could have increased bleeding, swelling and delayed recovery.

🔹 A regular gym-goer who had suffered an allergic reaction to penicillin following an insect bite. With the body already under stress, treatment was not appropriate until the reaction had fully resolved.

Could I have taken payment and carried out the treatments anyway? Yes.

Would it have been the right thing to do? No.

A good therapist doesn’t just know when to treat—they know when not to. Sometimes the best care I can provide is honest advice and the correct next steps.

Your health and recovery will always come before filling my appointment book.

🏃‍♂️ Sports Massage Explained 💆‍♂️

Sports massage is about far more than simply relaxing muscles. Whether you’re an athlete, runner, gym-goer, desk worker, or recovering from injury, sports massage can help your body perform and recover more effectively.

✅ Reduces muscle tension and stiffness
✅ Improves flexibility and range of motion
✅ Helps muscles move more freely and efficiently
✅ Increases blood flow to working tissues
✅ Supports recovery and healing processes
✅ Can help reduce pain and discomfort
✅ Encourages relaxation and reduces muscle spasm
✅ Helps calm pain signals within the nervous system
✅ Promotes better sleep, focus, and overall wellbeing

⚠️ It’s important to remember that sports massage isn’t a magic fix for injuries. It works best alongside appropriate rehabilitation, exercise, and movement to support your recovery and performance goals.

Every treatment is tailored specifically to you. No two sessions are the same because no two bodies, lifestyles, or goals are the same.

“After a long hard season, aka JB came in feeling battered, bruised and carrying the wear and tear that rugby brings. 💥🏉

As Rotherham Titans’ National League 1 winning scrum half, the demands on the body week in, week out are huge. During the off-season we focused on loosening tight muscles, improving mobility and getting his body in the best possible condition ahead of upcoming ankle surgery and recovery.

Hearing feedback like this is exactly why I started LK Sports Massage Therapy. Whether you’re an athlete competing at a high level, training in the gym, working on the tools all day or just struggling with everyday aches and pains — looking after your body matters. 🙌

Appreciate the trust JB and wishing you a successful surgery and strong recovery ahead of another big season with the Titans 💙❤️

From the very first session, Shaun came to me originally just looking for a bit of maintenance work on the body after over 20 years in scaffolding whilst still somehow managing to train 6 days a week. The goal at the start was simple — keep the body moving well, iron out tightness, aches and the constant wear and tear that comes with both grafting for a living and pushing yourself hard in training.

Fast forward to more recently and the focus shifted towards preparing for one of the toughest endurance events around — the GODS OWN BACKYARD ULTRA. Along the way there were shin pains, tight calves, random niggles popping up week after week, and the usual “something new hurts this week” conversations 🤣

But what’s stood out most through all of it is Shaun’s mentality. Elite mindset. No drama, no excuses, just gets on with it and finds a way forward. The sort of mentality that means you know someone was never going to quit easily, no matter how tough things got.

What started as treatment sessions quickly became regular chats about life, training, work, mindset and everything in between. That’s one of the best parts of this job — building genuine relationships with good people whilst helping keep them performing at their best.

To run 81 miles over 19 hours is absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way and a true testament to the work, consistency and mental strength Shaun has put in. Massive respect mate 👏💪

Recovery mode now… until the next challenge inevitably appears 👀

ALLOW ME TO REINTRODUCE MYSELF 👋🏼

I’m Lee — the face behind LK Sports Massage Therapy.

A secondary school PE trained teacher of 9 years, with every single one of those years spent working in a special needs school. Supporting people to build confidence, move better and believe in themselves has always been a huge part of who I am — whether that’s in education, sport or now sports massage therapy.

Outside of work I’m a husband, father and dog dad 🐶
I’m a massive sports man… although if I’m honest, I’m bang average at most of them 😂

The sports I love most are:
🏋🏼 Gym
🏉 Rugby
⚽️ Football
🚴🏼 Cycling

I’ve also:
🏆 Been a National BMX Racing Champion
🏉 Played rugby at university level
🟨 Worked as a football referee

So sport and performance has pretty much always been part of my life in one way or another.

I’m also a complete coffee addict ☕️
Favourite food? Easy… pizza 🍕

My wardrobe is basically 90% dark coloured sportswear — but I promise I’m not as miserable as my wardrobe makes me look 😂

The reason I became fascinated with sports massage therapy actually came from an injury of my own. After damaging the ligaments in my ankle, I saw a physiotherapist who honestly felt like a magician with his hands. The way he reduced pain, swelling and improved movement through treatment completely blew my mind.

That experience genuinely sparked my interest in what the human body — and human hands — can achieve through manipulation, recovery work and rehabilitation. Seeing how treatment could help people heal, move better and perform again was something I became fascinated by.

That’s what led me into sports massage therapy.

Whether you’re:
🏃‍♂️ An athlete
🧑‍💻 An office worker
🔧 On the tools grafting every day
😩 Or just someone carrying aches, pains and niggles around

…drop me a message.

Even if it’s just for some honest advice, I’ll always try point you in the right direction and help where I can 🙌🏼

🔥 Upper Back & Shoulder Pain Isn’t Always “Just Tight Traps” 🔥

A lot of shoulder blade, neck and upper back discomfort can actually come from several different muscles working together (or overworking). Here are some key muscles often linked to posture issues, gym soreness, desk work and stress tension:

📍 Infraspinatus – Helps rotate and stabilise the shoulder joint
📍 Latissimus Dorsi – Powerful pulling muscle used in rows, pull downs & posture
📍 Levator Scapulae – Common source of neck stiffness and “tight shoulder” feeling
📍 Rhomboid Minor – Helps pull the shoulder blades back and improve posture
📍 Supraspinatus – Part of the rotator cuff; important for shoulder movement and stability
📍 Teres Major & Minor – Assist shoulder rotation and arm movement
📍 Iliocostalis & Longissimus – Part of the spinal erectors helping support posture and spinal extension

💡 Common causes of irritation:
✔️ Poor posture
✔️ Stress/tension
✔️ Heavy lifting
✔️ Repetitive movement
✔️ Weak stabilising muscles
✔️ Long periods sitting/driving

✅ Sports massage, mobility work, strengthening and posture correction can all help reduce tension and improve movement quality.

⚠️ Get booked in and let’s see what we can do to get you moving pain free again
