Does your child need assistive technology to access education?

The Assistive Technology Grant may be able to help eligible children and young people with disabilities get the technology they need to participate in education.

More information on eligibility and how to apply is available in the Citizens Information Facebook post below.

Do you know about the Assistive Technology Grant?

👦 The grant helps students with a disability, who have difficulty communicating through speech or writing, to take part in education using assistive technology. For example, a child who is visually impaired may need braille equipment.

Your child may be able to get it if they're in primary or secondary school and they have one or more of the following:

➡️ Hearing impairment
➡️ Visual impairment
➡️ Physical disability
➡️ Severe or profound general learning disability

👦 Your child may also be eligible in other circumstances, for example, if they have autism.

The grant can be used to buy various types of equipment, including:

✅ A laptop or tablet with modified software
✅ Touch pads
✅ Keyboards

📝 Your child’s school must apply for the grant. The application must include medical or other professional reports showing your child’s need for specialist technology.

🗣️ If you think your child needs assistive technology to access education, speak to their school directly.

We were at the Department of Social Protection's pre-Budget Forum yesterday ahead of Budget 2027.
We welcomed the Minister's confirmation that a Cost of Disability payment remains the Department's top priority, along with a commitment to focus on the disability employment gap during Ireland's EU Presidency.
In the workshop discussions, there was strong agreement across the room. The top three concerns raised:
🔹 Introducing a Cost of Disability payment
🔹 The adequacy of core social welfare payments
🔹 Barriers to employment, including income disregards and the risk of losing secondary benefits.
These priorities reflect what our members have been telling us, and what we've set out in our pre-Budget submission. Budget 2027 must deliver. It's the least we can expect.

DFI's Pre-Budget Submission 2027 sets out what disabled people in Ireland need from Budget 2027, and why this is the year Government must deliver on the promises it has made.
