Before you buy a weight-loss pen from a Facebook seller, please read this.

Last year, UK investigators found counterfeit weight-loss pens — sold online and through social media — containing the wrong medicine at many times the intended dose. Medicines regulators seized millions of doses of illegal medicines in 2025, including thousands of black-market weight-loss pens, and Ireland's regulator, the HPRA, has reported a sharp rise in illegal weight-loss products seized here. The sellers haven't gone away. Some of them are in Facebook groups like the ones you may be scrolling right now.

We're a doctor-led clinic in Ireland, so here is the plain version of what keeps people safe:

1. Weight-loss injections are prescription-only in Ireland. Only a registered pharmacy can legally supply them, and only against a doctor's prescription — anyone else selling them is breaking the law.

2. You can check any doctor on the Irish Medical Council register — it's public and free.

3. A legitimate service asks about your health history before anything else. If nobody asks, walk away.

4. No genuine pharmacy sells through DMs, group chats or beauty salons.

5. If the price looks too good to be true, that is the warning.

If you're unsure about something you've seen for sale, ask below — we'd much rather answer a question here than see someone get hurt.

An Irish online fitness coach told RTÉ this weekend she was injecting a weight-loss drug twice a week before a photoshoot. Severe nausea within 30 minutes of every jab. Under 500 calories a day. She nearly collapsed in the gym before she stopped.

The drug is retatrutide — "reta" — and it is not approved for human use anywhere in the world. It's still in clinical trials. The same RTÉ report describes another person who was hospitalised this weekend with vomiting and kidney disease after getting reta injections twice a week from their personal trainer, at the gym.

Ireland's medicines regulator (the HPRA) says social media pages illegally selling weight-loss drugs are rising steadily. These vials come from unregulated labs — no prescription, no doctor, no quality control, no one to call when side effects start.

Doctors' plea, via RTÉ: if you've taken it and feel unwell, tell your doctor exactly what you took. Embarrassment is leaving hospital teams treating people blind.

We've written up the full story — what reta is, what the trials actually show (and what they don't), why the vials being sold aren't that drug anyway, and the 60-second check that separates regulated treatment from the black market:
