The unspoken ethics of surgical training.

A patient scheduled for laparoscopic surgery repeatedly asks whether the senior consultant will perform the operation. She is reassured that the surgical team is highly qualified.

During surgery, however, a resident performs large portions of the procedure under supervision as part of their surgical training.

The surgery is successful. The patient recovers well.

But afterward, she discovers that the trainee performed significant parts of the operation, something she feels was never clearly explained beforehand.

Should patients always be explicitly informed about trainee involvement during surgery, even in teaching hospitals?

Meet Our Leader | TORG Nigeria Chapter (TORG-NG)

We are pleased to introduce Michael Erhayanmen as Chairperson, The Operating Room Global Nigeria Chapter (TORG-NG).

Michael Erhayanmen is a health and youth development advocate whose work spans global surgery, cancer advocacy, leadership, and youth empowerment. A doctor in training at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Nigeria, he is committed to advancing access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care while promoting cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection, particularly within underserved communities.

He brings extensive experience through leadership roles and collaborations across leading global and national organizations. His previous and current engagements include serving as Associate Director, Global Education & Training, The Operating Room Global (TORG); Global SOTA Fellow, G4 Alliance; Media Editor, World Journal of Surgery; IAWPA UN Peace Ambassador; TEDx Organizer; and Founder of the Koret Boys Initiative, a platform dedicated to mentoring and empowering vulnerable boys to become responsible and purpose-driven leaders.

Michael has worked with and continues to collaborate with organizations including The Operating Room Global (TORG), the G4 Alliance, World Journal of Surgery, Incision International, The Robotic Global Surgical Society (TROGSS), Nigerian Cancer Society, End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative, and Cancer Advocacy Nigeria, contributing to initiatives that strengthen healthcare systems and promote equitable access to care.

As an aspiring cardiothoracic surgeon and emerging global health leader, Michael continues to contribute meaningfully through advocacy, education, innovation, and service.
