Scientists Discover Enzyme That Can “Eat Away” Arterial Plaque!
In a breakthrough that could transform the future of cardiovascular medicine, Italian researchers have identified a specialized bacterial enzyme capable of breaking down arterial plaque—the fatty, calcified buildup responsible for heart attacks and strokes. Published in the European Heart Journal, the preclinical study demonstrated that these enzymes can selectively dissolve the fibrin-lipid framework that forms atherosclerotic plaque. Typhoid Superbug Crisis: Ancient Disease Becoming Resistant to Almost All Antibiotics

Typhoid fever, a deadly disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, is rapidly becoming a major global health threat again due to increasing antibiotic resistance. A large international study found that extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains of typhoid are spreading quickly across South Asia, especially in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, while also reaching countries like the UK, USA, and Canada through international travel. These dangerous strains are no longer responding to many commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol, fluoroquinolones, and cephalosporins. Alarmingly, scientists have also discovered growing resistance to azithromycin, currently the last effective oral antibiotic available for typhoid treatment. If resistance continues to increase, treating typhoid could become extremely difficult, leading to higher death rates, especially in low-resource countries where sanitation and clean water access remain poor. Health experts warn that vaccination programs, improved hygiene, safe drinking water, and urgent development of new antibiotics are now critical to prevent another global infectious disease crisis. According to recent estimates, millions of typhoid cases occur every year, and untreated infections can be fatal in up to 20 percent of patients.

The management of Diabetes Mellitus has traditionally depended on repeated insulin injections or external delivery systems, presenting challenges for patient compliance and quality of life. Nevertheless, recent advancements in bioengineering and synthetic biology are creating new avenues for innovative therapeutic approaches. A team of researchers from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a groundbreaking implantable device that mimics the function of a self-regulating artificial pancreas. This implantable system comprises engineered cells that continuously monitor blood glucose levels and secrete insulin in a physiologically responsive manner. A crucial innovation in this technology is the use of a crystalline protective barrier designed to protect the implanted cells from the host immune response, minimizing immune rejection while facilitating efficient molecular exchange and enabling long-term functionality.
