🌡️ Fever and Paracetamol: What You Need to Know

🩺 By Dr Muditha Palliyaguruge from Attidiya Medical Centre

Fever is your body’s way of fighting infection. (Its a symptom not an illness)

Fever can make you feel tired, hot, or cold and keep you unwell.
High fevers without prompt treatment can lead to fits and make the patient delirious, which should be avoided for safety.

One of the safest and most commonly used medicines for fever is Paracetamol.

---

💊 What is Paracetamol?

Paracetamol is a medicine that helps reduce fever and pain. It’s safe for both adults and children if used in the correct dosage.

---

✅ Common Paracetamol Types & Strengths

1. Tablets 500 mg - For adults and elderly children

2. Syrup - 120 mg/5 ml (for babies & small children)

3. Syrup 250 mg/5 ml - for older children. (Not commonly used in Sri Lanka to avoid overdose by mistake)

4. Suppositories - 80 mg, 125 mg, 250 mg & 500 mg (Useful if the patient is vomiting or not taking orally)

5. Dispersible tablets 125 mg, 250 mg. This can be dissolved in water for children sos. (not common in Sri Lanka )

6. IV Injections - 1g in 100ml (given only in hospitals under supervision)
---

🧒 How Much Paracetamol Can I Take?

Adults:

1000 mg ( 2 tablets) every 6 hourly

Max: 4 grams per day (8 tablets)

Children:

Based on weight and age.

Use a dose calculator or ask your doctor

---

⚠️ Avoid Overdose – It Can Harm your Liver!

Do NOT:
🚫 Take more than the recommended dose
🚫 Mix different paracetamol brands (like Panadol + Calpol)
🚫 Take with alcohol
🚫 Repeat doses too early (before 6h)

---

🚨 Signs of Paracetamol Overdose:

Nausea or vomiting

Pain in upper tummy

Feeling dizzy or confused

Yellowing of skin or eyes (lately)

👉 If you suspect overdose – go to the nearest hospital immediately.

---

💡 Final Advice:

✔️ Paracetamol is safe when used correctly.
✔️ Always read the label or ask your doctor.
✔️ Keep medicines away from children.
