⚠️ HOMEOWNERS, PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN APPOINTING FOREIGN RENOVATION CONTRACTORS
Following a recent renovation incident involving serious delays and difficulty getting the contractor to take responsibility, we would like to remind homeowners to properly verify who you are entrusting your home and renovation money to.
This is not about nationality. There are responsible foreign professionals in Malaysia. The concern is when a contractor is not properly established, licensed, traceable or legally operating here.
Before engaging any contractor, especially an overseas or foreign-based contractor, please check carefully:
🚩 Do they have a permanent physical office or showroom in Malaysia?
If problems happen, do you actually know where to find them?
🚩 Are they legally operating and working in Malaysia?
Be cautious if the people handling your project cannot clearly demonstrate proper business and work status.
🚩 Do they have proper Malaysian registration and contractor credentials?
Check for SSM registration, relevant CIDB registration/licensing, and other applicable requirements.
🚩 How long has the company actually been established?
A company with 5+ years of operating history generally gives you more track record to verify than one that has only recently appeared.
🚩 Can they show REAL completed projects?
Beautiful 3D renderings are not the same as completed renovation works. Ask to see actual site photographs, completed projects and handovers.
🚩 Is the quotation unusually low?
Price is certainly one factor, but it should never override questions about legitimacy, experience and accountability.
The biggest concern is simple:
If your renovation is delayed, abandoned or something goes wrong after payment — who will be responsible, and where can you find them?
