Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) can provide valuable answers, but it does not replace traditional newborn screening.

A 2026 Thai study found that WGS helped clarify uncertain metabolic screening results and guide diagnosis in 38% of cases. However, it also missed certain genetic changes, highlighting why genetic testing works best alongside biochemical testing.

Precision medicine is not just about sequencing genomes, it’s about turning genomic information into better care.

Singapore’s National Precision Medicine programme shows how genetic testing can be integrated with referral pathways, genetic counselling, treatment, follow-up and family screening. In its familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) programme, genomics also identified some people who may have been missed by cholesterol screening alone.

For Malaysia, the lesson is clear: better outcomes require more than testing. We need locally relevant evidence, trained professionals, accessible counselling and coordinated clinical pathways.
