The bus engine hummed like a low, unresolved chord. Students laughed in the background, victory still dancing in their voices. But between them, something quieter sat down.
"What were you discussing with her?" she repeated, calmer this time.
"The competition," he replied. Then she nodded slowly.
"It must be interesting to find someone who discusses his defeat in the hands of his rival."

"And admiration?" she asked, eyes forward. "Is that learning too?"
"Admiration," he said carefully, "is respect wearing light."
"And light," she replied, "can also cast shadows."
