The three crosses of Amsterdam, known as the St. Andrew’s crosses, are a historic symbol that appears on the city’s flag and coat of arms.

These crosses come from the coat of arms of the noble Jan Persijn, who owned land in the Amsterdam area in the 13th century. Over time, his symbol became associated with the city itself.

There are a few common interpretations of what the three crosses represent:
• Protection against three threats: Traditionally, they are said to symbolize protection from fire, floods, and the Black Death (plague) — the biggest dangers the city faced in the past.
• Religious meaning: The crosses are called St. Andrew’s crosses because they resemble the X-shaped cross on which the apostle Saint Andrew is believed to have been crucified.

Today, the three white crosses on a black vertical stripe (with red on both sides) are one of the most recognizable symbols of Amsterdam. They are used everywhere — from flags and buildings to souvenirs and even tattoos — and represent the city’s identity, history, and resilience.
