Looking for a gut healing recipe? We asked Dunedin Naturopath Sarah Campbell-MacKenzie for some tips on how to support your gut health from your very own kitchen!
“Did you know that simply putting an organic chicken frame with a few veges/herbs and a little ACV (apple cider vinegar) into the slow cooker topped with water will create a beautiful nourishing BROTH in 24 hours? This can then be used as a base for all sorts of meals.
Our grandmothers’ generation were onto something, and not just how to stretch out every dollar.
BROTH contains these key amino acids:
GLUTAMINE is vital for gut health as it supports the small intestinal villi (hairs) that are required for nutritional absorption, it has been used to treat Crohn’s, colitis, and irritable bowel. It also supports liver health.
GLYCINE for blood health, digestion of fats, and liver support, and inflammation.
PROLINE is a fundamental building block for cartilage and for collagen.
ALANINE supports liver function and cell respiration and can improve physical function.
We have chicken frames instore or if you need a quicker option frozen and powdered readymade broths are also available.

Not all questions are easy to ask out loud, including ones involving poo! Lucky we are asking Registered Naturopath Francisca Griffin for you, about how your stool is an indicator for what is going on in your gut.

Dysfunctional gut? And how do you know? One place to start is with the noises it makes.
Next, have a look at the Bristol Stool Chart and assess where your p**p is at - numbers 3, 4 and 5 are in the goldilocks zone, depending on whether you go once a day or each time you eat.
This and other symptoms like bloating, gas, pain, unexplained changes in digestive function are your gut health indicators. Could be as simple as balancing your Mircrobiome, could be a LOT more complicated!

Here is an overview:

Diverticular disease occurs when small pouches form in the large intestine, and is often linked to a low-fibre diet.

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease is when stomach acids make their way up the oesophagus, Peptic Ulcer Disease involves the stomach and duodenum, SIBO - occurs when bacteria proliferate beyond what the Small Intestine needs for optimal function.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease is Ulcerative Colitis (lower intestine) and Crohns Disease (entire digestive system) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome is quite common - stress & some foods are often culprits.

There are many, many causes and symptoms for all of these, so please if you suspect something’s not quite right, talk to a professional before you dive in!

Our salads are made with whatever fresh vegetables are in season at Taste Nature's organic gardens. This means we get to be creative with what Rodney brings us each day. This morning we roasted up this gorgeous cauliflower whole and made it the hero of a savoury rice, tahini and vegetable salad with silverbeet, garlic and fresh coriander 😋
