🚨 A Tooth Infection Can Spread Beyond the Jaw and Become Life-Threatening

A tooth infection can enter the bloodstream. In severe cases, it can trigger a dangerous body-wide inflammatory response.

What starts as “just tooth pain” can become a spreading bacterial infection.

When decay reaches the pulp, bacteria multiply inside the tooth and form a dental abscess — a pocket of pus at the root or surrounding gum. This often develops from deep cavities, trauma, or failed dental treatment.

Warning signs you should never ignore:
• Severe, throbbing pain
• Facial or jaw swelling
• Fever
• Pain when chewing
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing

If untreated, the infection can spread into nearby tissues. In serious cases, bacteria may enter the bloodstream and trigger a systemic inflammatory response that can lead to organ failure.

While this complication is uncommon, the risk increases when severe infections are delayed or ignored.

A dental infection is a bacterial infection.
It is not “just a bad tooth.”

Early treatment — drainage, root canal therapy, or extraction — can stop the spread and prevent dangerous complications.

Recent research has identified a measurable improvement in blood sugar and lipid profiles after successful treatment of apical periodontitis. When the chronic infection is removed, the systemic inflammatory load drops, allowing metabolism to stabilize.

The study followed patients for two years and monitored glucose, pyruvate, cholesterol, and fatty-acid markers. Consistent improvements appeared after healing, suggesting that oral inflammation may influence broader metabolic pathways linked to heart health.

These findings add to growing evidence connecting untreated dental infections with higher cardiometabolic risk. Managing deep tooth infections early isn’t just about saving a tooth—it may help protect long-term systemic health.

For patients, the message is simple: persistent dental pain or swelling deserves prompt evaluation. Timely endodontic care reduces infection, supports healing, and may contribute to healthier metabolic balance over time.

BISCAST extends its deepest gratitude to 𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗥. 𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗢 𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗢 𝗧. 𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗡, outgoing Director for Student Development Services, for his years of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the growth and welfare of its student community.

Throughout his years of service, Engr. Ayen stood not merely as a director, but as a trusted mentor and dependable guide for countless ASTeans. His genuine care for students, reflected in his attentiveness, approachability, and student-first outlook, helped strengthen a culture of empathy, service, and volunteerism across the College.

Under his direction, BISCAST’s student programs and organizations grew with clarity and purpose, their impact reaching even beyond the campus. In true ASTean spirit, he empowered students to innovate, take initiative, and extend help to others, shaping them into responsive leaders and engaged citizens.

As he concludes his term, the BISCAST community honors Engr. Ayen’s remarkable contributions and the profound impact of his leadership. His legacy of compassion and student-driven leadership will continue to inspire the BISCAST community as the College moves forward toward its transformation into the Southeast Asian University of Technology (SEAUTech).
