Childhood eczema 🧴🤍 A few simple things that can make a big difference…
Eczema is incredibly common in children and, while there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, looking after the skin barrier consistently is key even when their skin looks good!!
Some emollients I like include Epaderm, Hydromol, Diprobase and Doublebase. The best one? Usually the one that suits your child’s skin and that you’ll actually use regularly! 🙌🏼
A few eczema basics to remember:
🧴 Moisturise regularly : not just during a flare. Apply generously and gently smooth onto the skin rather than vigorously rubbing it in. Also apply straight out of the bath as when the skin is wet it absorbs more product
🛁 Keep baths short & lukewarm : hot water can make dry, itchy skin worse.
🫧 Keep things simple : avoid fragranced soaps, bubble baths and heavily perfumed skincare where possible.
👕 Watch for overheating : heat and sweating can be big triggers for itching. Soft, breathable fabrics can help too.
💊 Don’t fear prescribed topical steroids. When used correctly, at the appropriate potency, on the right area and for the recommended duration, they are an important part of treating eczema flares.
✂️ Keep little nails short to minimise damage from scratching, particularly at night.
And remember: what works brilliantly for one child might not work for another. If eczema is persistent, severe, affecting sleep or not responding to treatment, speak to your GP, pharmacist or healthcare professional 🫶🏻
