"The universe within the body, with the uterus as its first home. A primordial water pouch that bursts and expels celestial bodies. The connection between the universe of waters and the cosmos is perceptible. Thus, it is possible to imagine the birth of a star from an inexhaustible, watery source of energy.” — about Casa flutuante, barriga, nascente estelar, which translates from Portuguese as Floating house, belly, star formation

Mariana Rocha’s painting is on view in the group exhibition Wild Metaphysics (curator: Sylvia Monasterios), alongside works by Thiago Barbalho, Maria Nepomuceno, Guga Szabzon, Marina Woisky, and Michel Zózimo.

In focus: Guga Szabzon

Guga Szabzon maps bodily sensations, memories, dreams, and figments of the imagination onto felt. Using a sewing machine, she creates lines that seem to dance across the felt surface as well as spaces where the thread has room to breathe. One might imagine landscapes, stars, charts, skies, bodies in motion, streams, bridges, trails, among many other possibilities. Taken as a whole, the works reveal idiosyncratic topographies.

Three recent works are on view in the group exhibition Wild Metaphysics (curator: Sylvia Monasterios), alongside works by Thiago Barbalho, Maria Nepomuceno, Mariana Rocha, Marina Woisky, and Michel Zózimo.

Art meets literature: because Wild Metaphysics is permeated by literature – drawing from magical realism and fantastic literature and borrowing its title from a reflection on fiction by Olga Tokarczuk –, we’re asking the artists and the curator of the exhibition to reveal one book they always recommend to friends.

SYLVIA MONASTERIOS, curator

Pick: 'The Museum of Eterna's Novel' by Macedonio Fernández

“A book written ahead of its time, it is a labyrinth that refuses a linear path and instead builds a museum of approaches, a cartography of everything that could happen before anything actually does. It opens with more than fifty prologues before the novel even begins, each one circling the impossibility of starting. What Macedonio proposes is a literature that treats reality as provisional and imagination as a constitutive force. And it is done with geniality and a very specific sense of humor. Jorge Luis Borges, strongly influenced by Macedonio, once said about his experimental writing: ‘Macedonio is metaphysics, is literature. To not imitate this canon would have represented incredible negligence.’” — Sylvia Monasterios

🗓 Wild Metaphysics is on view through October 24.

In focus: Maria Nepomuceno

Órbita cabeça nua exemplifies Maria Nepomuceno’s techniques of beading, weaving, straw braiding, and incorporating playful ceramic forms. The spiral motif reflects the form’s ubiquity in nature while evoking the perpetual flow of time and energy. Each of the artist’s works can be seen as a small ecosystem whose parts integrate and disintegrate in an infinite cycle.

Vlad Nancǎ’s work I don't know what Union I want to belong to anymore (2003) is currently on view at the IMMA - Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

The landmark exhibition Technologies of Peace: Art and Transition in Contemporary Europe (1989–2026) draws parallels between Ireland’s political history with those of European counterparts that have had similar trajectories in transitioning from post-conflict into democratic states of peace and stability.

Nancă’s work, made in the context of Romania’s post-socialist transition, reflects on the way different systems of power, belief, and aspiration overlap within the same social reality.

The exhibition is on view through 9 May 2027.

In focus: Thiago Barbalho

For the group exhibition Wild Metaphysics, Barbalho conceived of an installation that spans across an entire gallery wall. An in-situ drawing consisting of small shapes akin to small poems envelops four works on canvas and is complemented by three-dimensional elements: four fingers, made of paper and resin with pencil shavings, that position the entire installation as an intricately constructed image system.

Come by the gallery to take a close look!

On view through October 24 | Artists: Thiago Barbalho, Maria Nepomuceno, Mariana Rocha, Guga Szabzon, Marina Woisky, Michel Zózimo | Curator: Sylvia Monasterios

Art meets literature: because Wild Metaphysics is permeated by literature, drawing from magical realism and fantastic fiction, we’re asking the artists and the curator of the exhibition to reveal one book they always recommend to friends.

THIAGO BARBALHO, artist

Pick: ‘The Falling Sky. Words of a Yanomami Shaman’ by Davi Kopenawa, Bruce Albert

“This book directs the foundations of philosophy and writing toward a transformative and reparative path. The Indigenous Yanomami cosmology is recounted here in the voice of their people’s own shaman, who also tells of his journey in contact with non-Indigenous society (the ‘people of merchandise’) and its violent stupidities. It is a transcription of Davi Kopenawa’s oral accounts, for whom the very notion of a book holds no interest except as a colossal diplomatic effort to be heard by the West.” — Thiago Barbalho

🗓 Wild Metaphysics is on view through October 24.
