Everybody has a key of life. I really believe that, and I don’t think it’s something you earn or build so much as something already true about you that nobody has told you yet.

It doesn’t show up evenly, though. Some seasons it’s obvious and some seasons you’re too deep in the daily work of your life to see any of it, and I think that’s when people start wondering whether they have one at all. But ask the people who love you and they’ll tell you in about two seconds. They’ve been watching from a seat you don’t have access to.

And if it isn’t clear to you from where you’re sitting right now, that might just be a matter of where you’re sitting. Try the thing you’ve been curious about, take the class, say yes to something a little outside of what you’d normally do. New angles have a way of showing you what was already there.

So what’s your key of life? I really want to know. ☺️

There’s no applause for the private version of you, which I think is what makes it so hard! When you’re consistent in front of people you usually get something back for it, and when you keep a promise to yourself on a random Tuesday morning there’s nothing waiting on the other side except knowing you did it.

I notice this most in the smallest things, like the quiet time in the morning that nobody is checking on, or the journaling I told myself I’d do and could skip without a single person ever finding out … and some mornings I do skip it, honestly. But the mornings I don’t are the ones that seem to hold the rest of the day together, even though nobody sees them happen.

What’s the thing you do that nobody would ever know about?

I’ll be at The Legacy of Her on September 24, and I’ve been thinking about who got me here.

When I was in my hardest season I couldn’t see a way through any of it. I don’t really remember the timeline of how things got better, but I remember the people who stuck around while it was still bad. My family stayed, a few friends stayed, and there were providers who kept treating me like I was going to come back long before I believed it myself.

Gratitude is one of the eight traits I write about, and it changes when you stop thinking about it in general and name the actual person.

So WHO was that for you, and what did they leave you with?

Tickets are still available at thelegacyofher.net for the luncheon in Manassas, Northern Virginia, and there’s room for sponsors too. Come sit with us.

The moments I’m proudest of aren’t the ones where being myself was free.

Anyone can be authentic in a room where everyone already agrees with them! It’s the expensive version that actually tells you something, when you know saying the true thing is going to cost you time or energy or somebody’s good opinion of you, and you say it anyway.

The most recent one for me was writing an essay about why I practice yoga as a Christian. It cost me a lot of hours of research and thinking, and it cost me the comfort of everyone agreeing with me. Some people still don’t agree with where I landed, and some find it odd that I care about being consistent about it at all. I made my peace with both, because not saying it would have cost me more.

What’s a decision that cost you something and you’d make again?

I’ve never met anyone whose real problem was that they didn’t want it badly enough. Wanting it is usually the easy part! What’s missing is somewhere to put it, a set time, a few people who actually notice when you go quiet.

That’s the whole idea behind Key of Life Mindset Groups. Eight weeks, a small online group of people paying attention, and a plan built around what you’re actually trying to do.

DM me the word GROW and I’ll send you the dates for the fall accountability group plus a couple of questions to see if it’s actually a fit. No pitch, just an honest read on whether this is your season for it.

Every summer I make a plan, and it usually holds for about four days before it has to change because someone gets sick, the trip shifts, or a friend invites us to something more fun than what I had scheduled. By the middle of August, the season looks nothing like the one I sketched out in June!

For a long time I took that a little personally. I thought I just needed a better system … or to be the kind of person who could stick to a set plan.

I don’t think that anymore, or at least I’m holding it a lot more loosely. What I’ve noticed in myself is that the summers I actually enjoyed were the ones where I let the plan move and stayed steady in who I was while it did. That’s the whole thing, really! Staying myself through the changes rather than trying to stop the changes from happening…

Authenticity and flexibility are the two mindset traits I’m focusing on for the rest of the season, and I’ll share one angle on them here every week for the next five weeks. Come along if that sounds like your kind of summer. 😉

What has already gone sideways for you? I would love to know that I’m not the only one rebuilding in August.

I was walking through Cape May this week, in that stretch of summer when the light starts to change and you can feel the season getting ready to turn. Something in me starts taking a quiet inventory around this time every year, and it has been happening for as long as I can remember.

I think a lot of us are still running on a school calendar we left behind a long time ago. 😅 Fall arrives and something in the body remembers that this was always when things began. There is a rhythm already built into September. Everyone around you is settling into a routine, the mornings get easier to protect, and you have eight clean weeks of momentum before the holidays take over the rest of the year.

The point I keep coming back to is that you do not have to wait for a particular month to give you permission. If the pull is here now, that is reason enough to begin now.

That is why the fall Mindset Groups cohort starts on October 9, once the September rush has settled and you can actually see what your fall looks like. You get eight weeks with a small group, an accountability partner who knows what you said you were going to do today, and enough structure to keep you moving when the motivation runs out. 💪🏽

Early bird pricing opens August 14. The link in my bio will get you on the list so you hear the moment it does.

Hold fast your dreams … because nobody promised you a hundred years, and nobody promised you tomorrow … so just start today 🌞🤗

What does walking in the direction of your dreams look like to you?

For me, it looks like this — toes in the seawater and sand, feeling at peace within myself, challenging myself mentally to learn a new thing every day, living in harmony with those around me, and giving from the gifts and talents I have to serve my family and my community. 🫶🏽

The question then becomes: how do I figure out what’s important to me? How do I evaluate my decisions, goals, and dreams? I built a tool for that called the Values-Based Decision Matrix. You can find it on my website under Free Tools: yourkeyoflife.com/matrix

After you get that clarity, then it’s time to start walking — taking that first step — towards your dream. No more waiting, no more deliberation nor hesitation. Action aligned with your values is the perfect formula to lead to progress.

If you need help navigating your next step towards your dreams, DM me or comment here. 🌞 And if you’re ready to start walking alongside someone else for accountability, I got you — our fall cohort of Mindset Groups starts Oct 9 and the early bird enrollment starts August 14th.
