A few of you asked how to modify or progress the Jefferson curl.

You do not have to start standing on a platform through the largest range available. Start seated with a limited range, remove the target when you are ready, progress to standing, then gradually increase the range.

The goal is not to force the movement. It is to build strength and tolerance through a range you can control.

The right starting point depends on the person. Start where you are, then progress from there.

Rounding the back can look uncomfortable or unsafe when you have been taught to avoid that position. But we round our spines throughout everyday life. The Jefferson curl is one way we can gradually prepare the body for that movement using an appropriate range and load.

Every movement can be scaled based on the person and what their body is ready for.

Thanks for starting the conversation and giving us an opportunity to talk more about it!

Spinal flexion is a normal part of how your back moves. That does not mean everyone should start with a loaded Jefferson curl. It means we can choose a starting point that matches your current tolerance and build from there.

A cat cow may be the starting point. From there, we can add banded resistance, increase the range of motion, then add external load. The goal is not to force movement. It is to build capacity for the movements life asks of you.

Next, we’ll break down some of the modifications and progressions we use for Jefferson curls.

Exercises we’d never recommend as physical therapists… unless you want to build strength, improve mobility, and help your body become more resilient. 🙄

The right movement, at the right dose, can help you feel more confident doing the things your life requires.
