Today was a wonderful day! I attended and spoke at Iowa Healthiest State Initiative Conference. It was a great conference and I did some networking and even caught up with several people I know. The audience in my breakout session was fabulous! They were engaged, shared some vulnerable things and even laughed at my jokes! Since I live a mile from where the conference was I had time to go for a bike ride and home in time to have a virtual client session. I am so grateful to be able to do this work.

Last week, I had the opportunity to bring a full team back to my former department to teach in Nutrition Throughout the Lifespan. Together, we explored the complexity of eating disorder origins and pathways, and had meaningful discussions about the role these students will play as future Registered Dietitians.

It was especially rewarding to co-present alongside my Joyful Eating Intern and my MPP intern, and my Joyful Intern in training in the audience!

A big thank you to Graci who has been my Joyful Eating Intern for 2 years and she is graduating in May! I couldn’t do my job without her! She has been a star right out of the gate from meeting 1:1 with students helping them nourish their bodies without depriving to presenting in academic classrooms to creating you.tube content for students AND our healthcare professionals at Student Health! Graci is already an amazing educator and peer nutrition counselor! I am so excited to see her shine in her masters program and then when she becomes an RD!!! Thank you Graci!!!

Happy Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day—a day late:)

Becoming a Registered Dietitian is no small feat. It requires years of rigorous education in subjects like biochemistry, physiology, medical nutrition therapy, metabolism, and food science, followed by a a Masters Degree and supervised dietetic internship, passing a national board exam, and committing to ongoing continuing education to stay current with evolving science.
Dietitians are uniquely trained to translate complex nutrition science into practical, compassionate care for people across all stages of life and health conditions. From hospitals and clinics to schools, community programs, sports performance, and eating disorder treatment, RDs bring evidence-based nutrition to the table every single day.
After 31 years as a dietitian and as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, I still genuinely love the work I get to do. One of the most meaningful parts of my career has been mentoring and serving as a preceptor for dietetic interns, helping guide the next generation of dietitians as they enter this field and to be able to share my passion for weight inclusive care. I also love that I am able to be a nutrition counselor as well as continue to teach. Today I was over in Kinesiology teaching how to cultivate a better relationship with food and body.
But the very best part of my job is walking alongside individuals as they work toward a healthier relationship with food and their bodies. That work is deeply meaningful, and it’s a privilege to be trusted with it.
Here’s to the dietitians making a difference every day through science, compassion, and care.

The content was specifically created for Providers at ISU Thielen Healthcare. Framework is all around medical nutrition therapy without the focus on a person’s weight and restrictive diets. Videos are approximately 10-20 minutes and links provided in the text box for further learning. Two of the videos on this channel are longer—45 min (Hyperlipidema and Diabetes) the target here are students who have these conditions.

I am always adding more! Next on my list is condensed versions of Diabetes and Hyperlipids for the Providers!

Hyperlipidemia Class today lead by ISUs MPP-D (Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics) intern Frances! I absolutely love being a preceptor for students! To be able to mentor them in a weight inclusive anti- diet perspective with an eating disorder lens is so exciting and fulfilling! Double exciting is Frances is in the program I help build! I worked as a professor in the dietetic internship for 10 years and right as we were transitioning to the MPP-D, I decided to pursue my love for eating disorder counseling.
