The nice weather is finally here… which means the Foley Vision Center Spin Wheel is BACK outside on the sidewalk at Carriagetown Marketplace in Amesbury! 🎉☀️

If we’re open and the wheel is outside… give it a spin! You never know what you’re going to land on. 😄

A few recent winners:
👓 A random kid walking by won a selfie with Dr. Foley — my staff literally interrupted me during an eye exam so we could make the selfie happen. 😂
🥤 Another winner scored a VIP card to Tropical Smoothie Cafe worth up to $15.
👁️ Some people landed on 20% off Eye Candy Iris photography, which we’ll honor at their appointment.
🎵 Other prizes include choosing the music on our office Spotify playlist for the day (PG songs only please… we’re still an eye doctor’s office 😅).

Now… not ALL prizes are necessarily “good.”
Some spaces may involve you owing me money… and in the absolute worst-case scenario… you face our “firing squad.” 💦🤣
(Don’t worry — it’s just water.)

I only had it outside a few days last week, but apparently kids walking by were constantly stopping to spin it. I missed a lot of the chaos because I was seeing patients, but my staff kept giving me updates all day.

Honestly… life’s short. You’ve got to have a little fun too. ❤️

Back in 1982… apparently the signs were already there! 👀🤣

Here I am at age 9, a 3rd grader at Belleville Elementary School, featured in the Newburyport Daily News during “Save Your Vision Week” alongside local optometrists Dr. Robin Blair, Dr. William Watts, and Dr. Dan Appleton.

My eye health poster went on to place 🥇 1st in Massachusetts and 🥈 2nd in the entire United States! Not bad for a kid with markers and a dream. 😄

I guess becoming an optometrist was meant to be from the very beginning. Funny how life sometimes leaves little clues long before we realize it.

Now, decades later, I still absolutely love what I do — helping people see better, protecting eye health, and bringing new technology and ideas into eye care every single day at Foley Vision Center and Eye Candy Iris.

Some things never change… I’m still obsessed with eyes! 👁️❤️

A few years ago, I started experimenting with iris photography using my iPhone. The quality was pretty decent at the time… but we’ve officially leveled up. 😳

We recently invested in a high-tech dedicated iris camera with a built-in macro lens, and WOW… this thing is the real deal. The amount of detail it captures is absolutely incredible. Every iris truly looks like its own little galaxy. 🌌👁️

But beyond creating cool artwork, iris photography can occasionally reveal something much more important.

One of the most unusual cases I’ve ever seen was an actual Iris Melanoma — an extremely rare eye cancer. Iris melanomas are estimated to occur in roughly 1 out of every 1 million people per year in the United States. They can potentially spread (metastasize), most commonly to the liver, and can become life-threatening if not caught and treated early.

Thankfully, this patient was diagnosed, referred for treatment, underwent radiation therapy, and is now doing well with NO spread detected. 🙌

That’s the power of routine eye examinations.

Most people think eye exams are only about glasses or contact lenses, but sometimes we detect things that are potentially sight-threatening… or even life-threatening.

I definitely was NOT expecting to see a one-in-a-million iris melanoma… but as they say:

“It’s not rare if it’s in your chair.” 👀

Well… this one-in-a-million case was in my chair.

The good news? Early detection mattered. No spread. The patient can continue living life. Woohoo! ❤️

At Foley Vision Center and Eye Candy Iris, we truly love what we do. We’ll keep plugging away one day at a time helping people, embracing new technology, and yes… having some fun too by creating amazing iris artwork you can literally hang on your wall. 🎨👁️

That little yellowish bump on the white part of the eye? 👀
That’s called a pinguecula — and honestly, I see these EVERY single day at Eye Candy Iris & Foley Vision Center!

A pinguecula is a very common, usually harmless deposit of protein/fat/calcium on the conjunctiva (the clear tissue covering the white of the eye). They often show up on the side closest to the nose, just like in this photo.

Luckily, when we do iris photography, we can crop this out! 🔥

🔎 Common Causes:
☀️ UV/sun exposure
💨 Wind & dust
🏖️ Dry environments
😣 Chronic eye irritation
👓 Not wearing sunglasses outdoors

👀 Symptoms Can Include:
• Dryness
• Burning or irritation
• Redness
• Feeling like something is in the eye
• Cosmetic concerns (“What is that yellow spot?”)

Most people don’t even realize they have one until I point it out during an eye exam or during iris photography sessions!

💡 Treatment Options:
🧴 Artificial tears/lubricating drops
🕶️ UV protection & quality sunglasses
🔥 Treating underlying dry eye or inflammation
💊 Prescription drops if inflamed (pingueculitis)
🔬 Rarely, surgical removal if very bothersome

The good news? Most pingueculae are benign and manageable. But sometimes growths on the eye can look similar to more serious conditions — which is one more reason regular eye exams matter. 👁️

Your eyes deal with sun, wind, screens, allergies, dryness, and aging every single day. They deserve a checkup too. 😊

Some businesses get comfortable.
Dr. Foley gets curious. 👁️✨

At Foley Vision Center and Eye Candy Iris, we’re constantly thinking about what eye care will look like 10…20…30 years from now. New technology. Better patient experiences. Smarter diagnostics. More personalized care. More innovation.

Dr. Foley genuinely loves what he does — and it shows every single day. Whether it’s exploring the newest advancements in imaging, AI, diagnostics, dry eye care, specialty testing, or creating entirely new experiences like Eye Candy Iris, standing still has never been the goal.

Being stagnant is boring.
Learning is exciting. Innovating is exciting. Helping amazing patients with the best technology possible is exciting. 🤩

Every second of every day, Dr. Foley is researching, learning, improving, and asking:
“How can we make this even better for our patients?”

That mindset is what keeps Foley Vision Center and Eye Candy Iris moving forward while others stay comfortable. 🚀
