September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and we want families to know they do not have to navigate childhood obesity alone.

This month, we’ll be sharing education, Thrive Together stories, Health Talks and practical tools to help children, teens and families feel more informed and supported. Childhood obesity is a complex chronic disease shaped by genetics, biology, environment and many other factors, and the Understanding Childhood Obesity brochure is a helpful place to start: bit.ly/4xRaULR

90 minutes.

That's how long my son and I sat waiting for his endocrinologist recently. And yes, I took pictures because at some point you just have to laugh.

And also do the moonwalk 😂

I know healthcare is busy. I know appointments run over. I also know what it's like to be the mom sitting there thinking about everything else I was supposed to be doing that day.

And it reminded me how much waiting we've all just accepted as part of healthcare.

Waiting weeks for an appointment. Waiting forever once you get there. Waiting for someone to call you back. Playing phone tag when you have one quick question.

I don't want that to be the norm for my RISE families.

Direct Primary Care gives me the breathing room to be available, spend more time with your child, answer the question you sent me without making you jump through hoops, and often see you the same or the next day when something comes up.

I care a whole lot about your time! If that sounds refreshing, come check out how we do things at RISE. You can learn more about our DPC membership and schedule a Discovery Call on the website.

What a beautiful day to support a great cause! My boys joined me in representing RISE Peds at the Walk the Walk Foundation backpack drive, hosted by the Greater Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce. I love the chance to connect with our community while showing my own kids what it means to be good humans. Thank you for the opportunity! ☀️

A Success Story: What Real Progress Looks Like

Today was one of those days that reminds me why I love this work.

I said goodbye to a young man I've had the privilege of caring for through our RISE for Life program, and I've been sitting with it ever since. He's moving away soon, and this was our last visit together, but what a way to end this chapter.

I still remember where he started. The uncertainty in his eyes. The way he'd shrink a little in his chair. And today, he walked in with his shoulders back and a smile that honestly caught me off guard. The kind of smile that comes from somewhere deep, from finally feeling at home in your own body.

Watching him get here wasn't about a number on a scale, even though those numbers tell a real story too. It was about the small, unglamorous choices he made over and over... showing up, building better habits around food and movement and sleep, trusting the process on the days it felt hard, and choosing to keep going anyway.

What he's built for himself goes so far beyond physical health. I watched a young man discover his own strength. I watched his confidence grow alongside his progress. And today, saying goodbye, I couldn't help but feel overwhelming pride...not just in how far he's come, but in who he's become along the way.

I don't think I'll forget this one. I can't wait to see where this life takes him. Wishing him nothing but the best in his next chapter. I will always be here in the background cheering him on!
