In the immediate aftermath of a serious accident, caregivers are often thrust into a role they never expected to have—advocate, supporter, decision-maker, and source of hope during some of the darkest moments imaginable.

This wife shares the fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming emotions she experienced after nearly losing her husband. Today, his story looks very different. Through determination, intensive rehabilitation, and the unwavering support of those who stood beside him, he continues to make remarkable progress in his recovery journey.

While we often focus on the individual recovering from a brain injury, it's important to recognize the incredible impact that caregivers and family members have on the healing process. Their encouragement, sacrifices, resilience, and belief in recovery can make all the difference.

Brain injury is often called the invisible injury.

In our previous reels, we talked about why symptoms don’t always show up on standard imaging — and why so many people are told “everything looks normal” even when they know something isn’t right.

One reason for this lies in the brain’s energy system.

After a traumatic or acquired brain injury, the brain often becomes less energy efficient. Instead of processing information smoothly, it has to work harder to do the same tasks. That extra demand on the brain’s energy system can contribute to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.

The goal of targeted neurorehabilitation isn’t just symptom management — it’s improving neural efficiency so the brain can process information with less effort.

When the brain becomes more efficient, symptoms often begin to improve.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, led nationally by the Brain Injury Association of America.

One of the most persistent misconceptions in brain injury care is this:
“If imaging is normal, nothing is wrong.”

Standard MRI and CT scans are designed to detect structural damage. They are not designed to measure how efficiently the brain is functioning.

After concussion — and even after more significant injuries — symptoms are often driven by network dysfunction:

• Disrupted neurologic communication
• Autonomic dysregulation
• Reduced cognitive endurance
• Impaired metabolic efficiency

Brain injury can be structural. It can also be functional. Often, it is both.
