Surprise visits are the best kind!
Please join us in congratulating Jennifer, our Caregiver of the Month for September! 💛

Jennifer shows up for her clients every day with warmth, patience, and a smile that lights up the room. Her dedication makes a real difference in the lives of the families she serves, and we’re so grateful she’s part of our team.

We stopped by to celebrate her with some goodies. She earned every bit of it!

Not to snoop. To listen. Because the fridge tells a story.

Today is World Food Day, and for families of aging parents, food is one of the clearest early signals. A few things worth noticing:

• Expired food that hasn't been touched
• The same few easy items, over and over
• Plenty of snacks, not many meals
• Last week's groceries, still in the bag
• Clothes fitting more loosely than before

Most of these have simple explanations. Cooking for one isn't much fun. Standing at the stove gets tiring. The drive to the grocery store starts to feel like a big trip. Still, changes in eating are worth mentioning to their doctor.

This is where our Wellness Care caregivers come in. They help with meal preparation, transportation, light housekeeping, and the kind of company that makes a meal feel like a meal again.

Let's talk about what would help at your parent's table. (512) 851-8801 or visit our website.

Halloween can be fun for all ages, but safety should come first.

🧹Clear walkways
💡Improve outdoor lighting
🎃 Secure decorations
👟 Wear non-slip footwear
📋 Keep emergency contacts handy

Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce fall risks and keep older adults safe while enjoying seasonal festivities.

Who's picking him up? Who fills the new prescriptions? Who's there the first night? And what happens Monday, when you're back at work?

The first days after a hospital or rehab stay are a big adjustment. A little planning helps:

• Ask for discharge instructions in writing, and go over them before you leave.
• Fill new prescriptions on the way home, not the next day.
• Clear a path from the bed to the bathroom and the kitchen.
• Line up help for the first few days, especially mornings and nights.
• Write down follow-up appointments and who's driving.

That's what our Transition Care is for: help with discharge, the ride home, getting around the house safely, and support through recovery.

If a hospital stay is on the calendar, call us before discharge day: (512) 851-8801

Somewhere in Austin this week, a caregiver remembered exactly how someone takes their tea, noticed a limp that wasn't there last visit, and stayed twenty minutes past the shift because the conversation was good. Nobody scheduled that. That's just who they are. If you've ever wondered what actually makes home care work, it's not the paperwork. It's them. Contact Homewatch CareGivers of Austin today.

What does an ordinary day feel like for someone living with dementia?

Morning routines, a busy kitchen, a TV left on in the background. Small moments that seem simple to us can feel confusing or overwhelming to a loved one. Understanding that experience is often the first step toward a calmer, more comfortable home.

This Wednesday, October 21, join AGE of Central Texas and Homewatch CareGivers of Austin for Session 2 of our free four-part series, Caring for a Loved One Living with Dementia.

🗓️ A Day in the Life of Someone with Dementia
⏰ 11 am to 12 pm

You’ll gain insight into your loved one’s daily experience and leave with practical ideas for creating a more supportive environment at home. Attend in person for hands-on activities and group discussion, or watch live online and send your questions to our presenters.

Missed Session 1? You’re still welcome to join us. Each session stands on its own.

Please help us welcome Patrick Shankhour to the Homewatch CareGivers of Austin family! 👋

Patrick joins us as our newest Community Liaison, and he brings something you can’t teach: he knows firsthand what it means to care for someone you love. As a teenager, Patrick helped care for his father, and that experience shaped his belief in compassion, patience, and simply showing up when someone needs it most.

Now he’s bringing that same heart to families across Austin. Patrick will be building relationships with families and community partners, leading outreach and education, and guiding families from their very first call all the way to the start of care.

If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to bring in some help for a parent or loved one, Patrick is a great person to talk to. He understands what’s on your mind, and he’ll help you figure out what makes sense for your family.

Welcome aboard, Patrick! We’re so glad you’re here. 🤗

Leave a comment below to give Patrick a warm Austin welcome!

💜 The countdown is on! We're just a few weeks away from the Walk to End Alzheimer's!

On Saturday, November 7, our Homewatch CareGivers of Austin team will be at Camp Mabry, walking for the families, caregivers, and loved ones impacted by Alzheimer's.

Our Hope Walkers team has already received so much support, and we're incredibly grateful! But we're not done yet. 💪💜

There's still time to make a difference! You can join us for the walk, make a donation, or simply share our team page to help us reach more people.

Every step and every dollar brings us closer to better care, more resources, and a future without Alzheimer's.

The mornings start to cool off. The patios fill back up. And being outside sounds good again.

For a lot of older adults, a long Texas summer means months spent mostly indoors. Fall is a chance to get back out, even for an hour.

A few easygoing ideas for you and your mom or dad:

• A slow loop around Mueller Lake Park
• A stroll through the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
• Coffee on a shady patio, just to people-watch
• A drive out to Lake Travis for the sunset
• Or simply moving morning coffee to the front porch

Now we want to hear from you. Where's your parent's favorite fall spot in Austin? Tell us in the comments. Another family might find their next outing in your answer.

And if getting out the door takes more help than it used to, our Wellness Care caregivers can help with transportation and good company along the way.

⚕️Understanding medical information is a key part of staying healthy.

Before leaving your next appointment, consider asking:
✔️ What is my diagnosis?
✔️ What treatment options are recommended?
✔️ What symptoms should I monitor?
✔️ When should I follow up?
✔️ Who should I contact with questions?

October is National Physical Therapy Month. Physical therapy can help older adults improve mobility, regain strength, and maintain independence. The benefits can be even greater when therapy is combined with ongoing support at home.
