The annual Westminster Dog Show Fundraiser supporting Alzheimer’s Texas will take place Friday, August 21. Heritage Title, this year’s title sponsor, will be on hand to present The Best in Show award.

This resident-only event is one of many events Westminster hosts throughout the year to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Texas and support our mission to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Research continues to play an important role in advancing our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. 🧠

A new research center at UT Southwestern Medical Center is working to advance Alzheimer’s research in North Texas. The North Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is one of only two Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers in Texas and will bring together researchers and clinicians focused on areas including risk factors, biomarkers, clinical trials and potential new treatments.

The Center is also building opportunities for community engagement, education and training, helping strengthen Alzheimer’s research across the state.

As research continues to move forward, Alzheimer’s Texas remains committed to supporting efforts that advance knowledge and improve the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Research continues to expand our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of early detection.

A recent study from Texas A&M University explored changes in cognitive flexibility, or the brain’s ability to adapt, switch between tasks and learn new information, in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The findings may help researchers better understand the earliest changes associated with the disease and inform future studies.

While additional research in humans is needed, studies like this highlight the value of ongoing scientific research and the progress being made toward improving our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s Texas is proud to partner with the Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) to support guardians through a new training video featuring our own Joan Asseff, LCSW-S. Developed to help individuals serving as guardians of adults with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related diseases, the training offers practical guidance and resources to help navigate the caregiving journey.

The video is available in both English and Spanish and is part of a statewide training initiative designed to better equip guardians with the knowledge they need to support their loved ones.

New research efforts in Texas are helping expand understanding of how Alzheimer’s disease impacts adults with Down syndrome and why early detection matters.

UNT Health Fort Worth recently became the first site in Texas to join the national Alzheimer’s Biomarker Consortium-Down Syndrome (ABC-DS) study, a major research initiative focused on identifying early biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease in adults with Down syndrome.

Studies show the lifetime incidence of Alzheimer’s disease among adults with Down syndrome is approximately 90%, with dementia symptoms often developing at a significantly younger age than in the general population. As more Alzheimer’s treatment options and clinical trials continue to emerge, research initiatives like ABC-DS play an important role in advancing understanding, improving early detection and expanding future care opportunities for individuals and families impacted by the disease.
