For the first time in years I caught myself hating my own face. Nothing changed about my face. What changed is I stare at it on camera every single day. It just requires more awareness and thought control now.
Turns out there’s a name for it: Zoom dysmorphia and Snapchat dysmorphia. Studies found over a third of people developed a brand new appearance concern just from seeing themselves on video, and 86% of dermatologists said patients came in because of how they look on camera.
What helps me not fall into this trap:
1. I stopped rewatching my videos ten times before posting. One check, then out.
2. I remind myself the lens lies. A front camera at arm’s length distorts every face.
3. The test: would I think this if I never filmed myself? If no, it’s the camera talking, not me.
4. I say it out loud. Naming it takes its power away.
I’m not getting anything done. I just needed to put this somewhere and remind you too to love your face 🫶🏻
