“[T]he Gnostics knew something, and it was this: that human life does not fulfill its promise within the structure and establishments of society, for all of these are at best but shadowy projections of another and more fundamental reality. No one comes to his true selfhood by being what society wants him to be nor by doing what it wants him to do. Family, society, church, trade and profession, political and patriotic allegiances, as well as moral and ethical rules and commandments are, in reality, not in the least conducive to the true spiritual welfare of the human soul. On the contrary, they are more often than not the very shackles which keep us from our true spiritual destiny.”
― Stephan A. Hoeller, The Gnostic Jung and the Seven Sermons to the Dead (Wheaton, IL: Quest Books, 1982), 143–144.

Everyone wants the shortcut.

The technique that skips the suffering. The system that delivers the result without the struggle. The teacher who gives you the answer without making you walk the path yourself. We live in an age that has turned this desire into an entire industry: instant enlightenment, fast-tracked awakening, spiritual bypassing dressed up as wisdom.

Helena Blavatsky spent her life dismantling that illusion.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was one of the most remarkable and controversial figures of the 19th century. Co-founder of the Theosophical Society, she dedicated her life to the study of ancient wisdom traditions, esoteric philosophy, and the hidden laws that govern consciousness. Her work synthesized Eastern and Western mysticism at a time when the West had almost entirely forgotten that such knowledge existed.

And her message was consistent: there are no initiates by inheritance, no saints by accident, no awakened souls by shortcut. The divine knowledge she wrote about cannot be transmitted like information. It must be earned through direct experience, through the friction of living, through failure and disillusionment and the slow burning away of everything false within you.

The steep path of trial is not punishment. It is the mechanism of transformation itself. The Hermetic traditions taught this. The mystery schools of Egypt, Greece and India taught this. Every genuine path of inner work teaches this. Difficulty is not an obstacle to growth. In most cases, it is the very instrument of it.

The key, the mortar, the raised hand in this painting say what Blavatsky said in words: something sacred is being guarded here. Not from you, but for you. Until you are ready to receive it.

What trial in your life has turned out to be the most important teacher you ever had?

St. George is not simply a saint who killed a dragon.

He is one of the oldest archetypal myths humanity has ever produced, found in nearly every culture on earth, thousands of years before Christianity.

The dragon is not an animal.

In every esoteric and psychological tradition, the dragon represents the primitive forces within the human being. Fear. Desire. The unconquered instincts. The unexamined darkness of the unconscious. Jung would call it the Shadow. It is the heavy, untamed weight of our lower nature, the part of us that devours, hoards, and destroys what it cannot control.

St. George is not an external hero.

He is the part of the human being that has chosen to awaken. That has chosen consciousness over automatism, virtue over animal impulse, spirit over instinct. His battle does not take place on a battlefield. It takes place within.

The princess he rescues is the soul, the anima in Jungian terms. That inner, luminous part of the self that is held captive by the dragon of unconsciousness until the hero finds the courage to face what lives in the dark and free her.

This is why the myth appears everywhere. The Babylonians told it as Marduk slaying Tiamat. The Egyptians told it as Horus defeating Set. The Greeks told it as Perseus and the sea monster. And then the Christian tradition gave it the name we know today.

The story is always the same.

Every human being contains the dragon. And every human being contains the saint who can slay it.

Starting in 1609, owning this drum was a crime punishable by death in the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. In 1767, while hundreds of them were being thrown into the fire, a Norwegian priest sketched and documented one.

When the Norwegian priest and linguist Knud Leem (1697-1774) arrived in Finnmark (Northern Norway) as a missionary in 1725, he formed a deep bond with the Sámi people. He wore their clothes and learned their language. For years,he observed shamanic sessions and personally drew what he saw.

The engraver O.H.von Lode transferred these drawings onto copper plates. Published in Copenhagen in 1767, the book contained over 600 pages of parallel Danish-Latin text and 100 copperplate engravings. It's the most comprehensive Sámi ethnography published in Northern Europe in the 18th century.

The symbols on the drum's membrane were drawn with a red dye made from alder bark. This color symbolized blood. A single drum could hold up to 150 symbols. The noaidi (shaman) would place a brass ring called a 'vuorbi' on the membrane and beat the drum. The symbol where the ring stopped was the answer to the question asked: the location of a lost reindeer, the luck of a hunt, or which sacrifice to offer...

On Northern Sámi drums, the membrane was divided into three tiers by horizontal lines: the upper tier was the realm of the gods, the middle tier was the human world, and the lower tier was the realm of the dead. In 1692, an almost 100-year-old Sámi shaman named Anders Poulsen had his drum confiscated and stood trial for witchcraft in Vadsø (Northern Norway).

Poulsen played his drum in court. He called out to his gods, asking them not to be afraid of the Norwegians in the courtroom. In his 16-page testimony, he explained every single symbol on the membrane one by one. Before he was convicted, he was murdered in his cell with an axe by a mentally ill person named Villum Gundersen. He became the last victim of the Finnmark witch trials.

Missionary Thomas von Westen had about 100 drums collected all by himself. He sent them all to Copenhagen. In the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1728, 70 of them burned to ashes. Today, only 71 original Sámi drums are preserved worldwide.

Today’s collective Oracle:

Spirit of the Animals Oracle Deck

Owl is the messenger and revealer of secrets. Their silent flight and supreme vision make them supreme hunters. If they cross your path repeatedly it is a warning to review your situation and see where deception is lurking. If Owl is your totem you are an Old Soul. Be sure to keep your knowledge secret unless asked to provide counsel. The night is auspicious for Owl people. When the Moon is full you are creative and energized. Embrace your gifts and fly with the Masters.

• Are you in the dark about a situation?

• Is Owl asking you to release the past so you can change and take flight?

• Have you allowed yourself to be deceived?

• What secrets do you need to discover to know the truth?
