What’s a Skimmer “Weir” Door?
A skimmer weir door is the small floating flap located at the front of a pool skimmer. Its job is simple but important: it controls the flow of water into the skimmer so debris gets pulled off the surface of the pool more effectively.
When the pump is running, the door floats slightly open and allows a thin sheet of surface water to pass over it and into the skimmer basket. Leaves, bugs, oils, and other debris that float on the surface get carried in with that flow. When the pump shuts off, the door swings closed, which helps keep debris trapped in the skimmer instead of drifting back into the pool.
A Brief History
Early swimming pool skimmers began appearing in residential pools in the 1950s, as pool builders started focusing more on surface cleaning and water circulation. The floating weir door was introduced shortly afterward as a simple mechanical improvement.
Without it, water would rush into the skimmer from deeper in the throat rather than pulling debris from the surface. The weir door solved that problem by creating a small “dam” that forces the skimmer to pull from the very top layer of water—where most debris lives.
Today, the design is still widely used because it’s simple, inexpensive, and extremely effective, proving that sometimes the best engineering solutions are the simplest ones.
