It’s a simple but powerful idea. “Divide your day into three sets of eight. Eight hours to sleep. Eight hours to work. Eight hours to live and make a difference.” Even with years of experience in oncology and two parents who have faced cancer, John Ruggiero was still shocked when his professional mission became deeply personal with his own diagnosis.

That experience reinforced everything he believes about our purpose in patient care. Today, he challenges everyone around him to think bigger and explore how they can make a difference.

Because the work we do touches real people — parents, children, siblings, and friends.

Week after week, our employees show up — not just for patients, but for the communities around them. Volunteering is part of who we are, and we're proud to support it with a paid volunteer day and our volunteer commitment program - which includes a donation to the non-profit where an employee volunteers their time in a significant way - as part of our benefits.

Because we know that people who care about the world outside of work bring that same heart to everything they do inside it.

Are you someone who leads with purpose? Come join a team that does too.

“I’ll never stop fighting for patients and challenging the status quo in patient care.”

A promise Michele made to her father when he was told there were no other treatment options for his stage four cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts of the liver.

That experience and perspective from her time as a registered nurse allows her to think holistically about new medicine development and ensure patients and their families are always at the center of our work.

This month is a reminder that progress is built in the everyday moments—how we show up, how we lead, and how we support one another. That’s why we’re sharing reflections from two women across our organization: practical lessons you can carry into your own career (and pass on to someone else).

Two themes stand out:

🎤 Owning your voice - and letting your strengths be visible.

🫶 Mentorship that matters - choosing guidance based on fit and relevance and saying yes when it’s your turn to help someone grow.

💬 Who helped shape your path—and what’s one lesson you’d share with the next woman coming up?

Nurse ➡️Researcher ➡️Caregiver

Michele Schmidt shares the moment her professional mission became deeply personal - when her father and hero was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. As a nurse, researcher, and caregiver, Michele reminds us to: keep patients and families at the center, challenge the status quo, and to move with precision when people are waiting for hope.

This isn’t just a career story. It’s a reminder of what’s possible when science is guided by compassion.

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the power of giving, because progress in science, medicine, and patient care doesn’t happen alone.

At Daiichi Sankyo, we see every day how mentorship, advocacy, and opportunity help women grow, advance innovation, and strengthen the teams behind life‑changing medicines. When we invest in one another - by sharing knowledge, opening doors, and lifting others up - we all gain.

💙 Who’s a woman who has helped you grow?

Tag her and share how giving made a difference in your journey.
