For Mark Powers, the decision to pursue fellowship came from recognizing that residency training was only the beginning of the clinical growth he wanted to achieve.

“I completed an orthopedic residency program, but didn’t feel like I had the skills required to help those with persistent pain conditions. I also wanted to think at a higher level.”

Mark was especially motivated by a desire to help patients who had struggled within the healthcare system and continued to experience persistent pain.

That pursuit of advanced clinical reasoning continues to shape his work today. Mark remains an AAOMPT member to maintain his fellowship status while taking advantage of the organization’s educational resources and professional network.

Mark is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Georgia Southern University, where he leads the anatomy curriculum and contributes to therapeutic exercise and orthopaedic courses.

His fellowship training has directly influenced how he teaches future physical therapists.

“The clinical/thinking skills I gained through my fellowship have allowed me to better challenge students to think at a higher level.”

He emphasizes helping students move beyond memorization toward a deeper, concept-based approach to clinical decision-making.

🔬 Mark’s work in education and research

Mark previously co-authored a literature review with his fellowship mentor, Joseph Brence, titled:

“The Role of Vision and Observation in Clinical Practice: What We’re Seeing.”

The paper explored the potential role of observation and visual feedback in rehabilitation through the lens of the mirror neuron system.

The evidence continues! Shoulder pathology on MRI is common as age increases, this is a normal component to aging. Dr. Ibounig discusses his 2026 JAMA study, “Incidental Rotator Cuff Abnormalities on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” The study used a large representative Finnish population sample, bilateral 3 Tesla shoulder MRI, clinical examination by shoulder surgeons, and extensive questionnaires to better understand the prevalence and meaning of rotator cuff findings in symptomatic and asymptomatic shoulders.

For Connor Mullan, the path to AAOMPT began with a special topics course during physical therapy school.

“I was awakened to how much I didn’t know when it came to manual skills and corrective exercise.”

Learning from a Fellow during that course opened Connor’s eyes to the depth of knowledge and skill possible through advanced training. From that point forward, he intentionally sought employers who would support his pursuit of orthopaedic manual physical therapy fellowship training.

Today, Connor remains an AAOMPT member because of the organization’s commitment to the profession and to the highest level of training available to physical therapists.

“Support for our profession and the highest level of training a PT can have.”

Connor lives and works in Greenville, South Carolina, where his AAOMPT involvement helps him communicate and collaborate with other healthcare providers at a high level.

“Being part of AAOMPT helps me to communicate with other medical providers in the community on a higher level.”

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of Connor’s professional journey is seeing the impact of fellowship training extend beyond his own career.

Since Connor achieved his FAAOMPT, his organization has launched both an Orthopaedic Residency Program and an Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program—creating new opportunities for other physical therapists to pursue advanced training and develop their clinical expertise.
