Heartland Whole Health Institute today announced the launch of a statewide Graduate Medical Education Technical Assistance Center to help strengthen Arkansas’ physician pipeline.

Arkansas trains approximately 430 doctors each year but out of 1,281 total GME positions in the state only 375 are for medical school graduates entering their required first year of residency, pushing many Arkansas trained doctors to leave the state for training.

The new center will provide guidance and technical support to hospitals, health systems, academic partners, and communities working to develop and expand residency programs, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

At the Healthcare Executive Leadership Conference, Claude Pirtle, MD, MBA, MSACI joined leaders from across Arkansas to discuss what it takes to move health care forward.

The conversation highlighted the power of collaboration across hospitals, health systems, and community partners to expand access, strengthen the workforce, and design care around real community needs.

From rural partnerships improving access to specialty care to statewide efforts to grow the physician pipeline, it’s clear that meaningful progress happens when organizations align around shared goals and work collectively to scale solutions.

As health care evolves, advancing whole-person care will depend on continued collaboration — bringing together innovation, local insight, and a shared commitment to better outcomes for all.

Studies show that chronic disease is reshaping communities across the Heartland; but by advancing collaboration, it doesn’t have to define our future. In a recent article in Heartland Forward, Claude Pirtle, MD, President, Heartland Whole Health Institute, outlines how regional collaboration and four key shifts can transform long‑term, whole‑person care.

From modernizing payment models to expanding technology, strengthening the workforce, and prioritizing prevention, Dr. Pirtle lays out an actionable path toward a healthier Heartland.

Today we welcomed our 2026 Morehead-Cain Scholars from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! These five students will spend the next eight weeks with us, working on a project for their Civic Collaboration Program. This year’s students will explore how we support health systems in Northwest Arkansas in recruiting and retaining health care talent.

We recently welcomed our 2024 Morehead-Cain Scholars during an in-person update on their project. While in residency, they developed a Marshallese Nutrition Project to improve health outcomes through culturally tailored nutritional interventions in a primary care setting.

During their trip, they also met with their project team from Community Clinic. The project is expected be complete the end of this year.

We love seeing the continued engagement in our Arkansas community!

Today marks one year since the Heartland Whole Health Institute building opened to the public.

Located on the Crystal Bridges campus, the Institute’s home was designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, with inspiration drawn directly from the Ozark landscape.

Over the past year, the building has become a gathering place for new ideas and bold collaboration. It has also been a home for the Institute’s work: to lower costs, improve quality, and broaden access to health care across the Heartland.

We are grateful for a year on campus with Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, Art Bridges, Art and Wellness Enterprises, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; and the many partners, innovators, educators, and community members who have filled this space with energy, curiosity, and commitment.

Don't forget, you can always check out our public spaces yourself Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Want more details? Join a free, guided architecture tour on Fridays from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
