EDENT1FI (European Action for the Diagnosis of Early Non-clinical Type 1 Diabetes For Disease Interception) is revolutionizing T1D diagnosis, care, and prevention through comprehensive early screening and psychosocial treatment for parents and caregivers.

Launched in 2023, the five-year project targets more than 220,000 children and adolescents across Europe for early-stage, pre-symptomatic type 1 diabetes. The goal is to detect the disease early, intercept its progression, and educate families before serious symptoms appear.

EDENT1FI, a major pan-European initiative, aims to transform the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening. At the ADA 86th Scientific Sessions, Katharine Barnard-Kelly presented research from the project, where her abstract, DED1S, was recognized as a Top 10 Abstract.

Kenzi remembers how unexpected her oldest daughter's diagnosis felt. "It is not genetic in our family that we are aware of," she said.

"We do not know anyone in our bloodline that has type 1." Looking back, she remembers noticing symptoms and bringing concerns to her child's primary care provider. Everything appeared normal at the time.

Manning was eight years old at the time of his diagnosis. Over a period of a few days, he grew very ill with severe weight loss, frequent urination, increased thirst, hunger and fatigue.

“My parents took me to the doctors, and after a urine and blood test, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I had never heard of it,” said Manning. “In all honesty, I’m not even sure my parents knew what it was. I was admitted to the hospital straight away. I remember my blood sugar being in the 30’s mmol.”

In the US, blood sugar is measured in mg/dL, while many other countries use mmol/L. A reading in the 30s mmol/L range corresponds to 540-702 mg/dL.

Fortunately, Manning stayed conscious throughout his bout with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), but he remembered it being very close.

As we plunge through our busy days, we tend to brush feelings of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts aside – which is the worst thing you can do.

How do you feel about the future of diabetes care?

There's a lot to be hopeful about. Advances in diabetes technology, earlier screening, new therapies, and research are changing what's possible for people living with type 1 diabetes.

At the same time, many challenges remain. Access, affordability, and awareness continue to shape the daily realities of diabetes management for millions of people.

Steve Zortman could not breathe.

He was exhausted to the point he could barely function. His body felt heavy, and each breath required effort that never seemed to be enough. “I felt like I was going to suffocate,” he said.
