Following the child is one thing. Sustaining the adults who do that work every day is another.

Last week, we shared the story of Leah Walker and Kirsti Forrest at Spicebush Montessori School, a teacher-led Wildflower school in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, and their decision not to expel a neurodivergent four-year-old who was dysregulating every single day. The question that piece left open was: how do two people keep showing up for work like that without burning out?

This week's piece gets into the answer. It comes down to the agency that comes with running a teacher-led school, and the honest, unglamorous work Leah and Kirsti have done to show up for each other.

🌿 Are you already familiar with the gentle moving mindfulness practice T’ai Chi Chih? If so, the T'ai Chi Chih Guided Practice series will be commencing soon at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library … join me this summer and start your Thursday mornings with peace, movement, balance 🌿

Designed for those who’ve attended at least one intro-level class, together we’ll be exploring each of the 20 movements more deeply and refamiliarizing ourselves with the complete practice while further cultivating wellbeing and enjoying the calm energizing effect of practicing in this peaceful unparalleled garden setting.

Law enforcement officers are dedicated. Every day, they put on a uniform and deal with everything from kids causing mischief to bank heists. And while officers always strive to do their best, some situations are better suited for a different kind of response — like mental health crisis calls. Which is why Delaware regularly provides Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.

(Think of it this way: if a law enforcement officer doesn't "put on the oxygen mask first" — allowing himself the time and space for adequate self-care, especially after a deeply traumatic event — how will he be totally physically & mentally present, fit & able to help someone else do the same???)

CIT programs not only teach law enforcement officers how to safely de-escalate mental health crisis situations, they also teach them vitally important resiliency skills & tools. In fact, law enforcement agencies that have CIT programs in place have reported as much as an 80% decrease in officer injuries during mental health crisis situations.

Not only do CIT programs educate officers, they also bring together community members and mental health care providers to offer convenient options for treatment and to reduce the number of repeated calls for police service, saving officers valuable time.

So it should come as no surprise that I'll be presenting a 90-minute experiential T’ai Chi Chih demo at NAMI Delaware’s Advanced Crisis Intervention Teams training next week in Dover (and I am DEEPLY honored to have been invited to do so!) … stay tuned for more details, ok?
