Big congratulations to Philip A. Patterson, FACHE, named the new CEO of Grandview Health, effective August 20, 2026!
Patterson brings over 30 years of hospital leadership experience, most recently as Market President for Ascension Providence in Waco, TX. He actually got his start right here in Birmingham, working at Baptist Montclair Hospital while earning his master's at UAB — so in many ways, this is a homecoming.
Board Chairman James Spann called him a "strategic leader, consensus builder and relationship builder" with a deep commitment to patients, physicians, and staff alike.
Grandview is home to many physicians who are valued members of the Jefferson County Medical Society. JCMS congratulates Mr. Patterson and wishes him success leading Grandview's continued growth in serving Jefferson County.

JCMS members and their families hit the trail Saturday for the "Take a Hike!" event and it turned into a great lesson in local history and science along the way. We learned that Turkey Creek is home to the vermilion darter, a tiny fish found nowhere else in the entire world — its discovery and protection are actually why this land became a nature preserve in the first place. Then everyone rolled up their sleeves (and pant legs!) and waded right into the creek with nets to dig around and see what we could find — crawfish included!

A huge thank-you to Emily Hutto with Jefferson County Greenways Foundation for leading us on this adventure and sharing her knowledge of the creek. And thanks to everyone who came out to hike, learn, and enjoy the outdoors together.

We're excited to kick off the new Wayne Finley Physician Symposium season on Tuesday, September 15, after a great summer break! Our group will meet at the Homewood Library at 10:00 a.m. for a great presentation, "Catalyst: Translating Precision Health Into Clinical Impact," presented by Southern Research Institute.

Southern Research is a nonprofit scientific research organization headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with nearly 85 years of experience translating scientific discovery into real-world impact. This presentation will feature an overview of the organization’s work advancing drug discovery and biotechnology, along with a spotlight on Catalyst, the statewide precision medicine initiative. Catalyst is expanding access to genomic testing and personalized health insights for Alabamians while building a robust data resource to support future medical innovation and more effective treatments. Attendees are encouraged to participate in Catalyst Free Genetic Testing — a comprehensive genomic assessment identifying risk factors for chronic conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

The Birmingham Legion FC outing on August 1 was postponed due to weather, but JCMS members and their families still enjoyed an evening of entertainment in the club area at Protective Stadium, showing their support for Birmingham Legion FC. Guests were treated to appearances by Spider-Man and Ghost-Spider, balloon animals, face painting, bubbles, and live music from the band. An announcement on the rescheduled match is coming soon — members who missed out this time won't want to miss the next chance to cheer on the Legion!

Big congratulations to the Telephone Answering Service (TAS) team! 🎉 They've just been recognized with the Association of TeleServices International's (ATSI) Award of Excellence — and this makes nine years in a row.
That kind of consistency doesn't happen by accident. It takes real dedication, day in and day out, to keep earning that recognition year after year. Congratulations to the top scorers and to the entire team on this incredible achievement!
