June is Men's Health Month β€” a timely reminder that preventive care saves lives.

According to the CDC, women are 33% more likely than men to see a medical provider. That gap has real consequences. Heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers are all more manageable when caught early β€” but only if men show up for the appointment.

The Jefferson County Medical Society recognizes the physicians across our community who are making those conversations happen every day, and encourages every man in Jefferson County to make this the month he prioritizes his health.

Schedule the appointment. Know your numbers. Show up for yourself.

⚠️ Advisory for Alabama Medical Professionals
The Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners has issued a formal warning: prescribing, dispensing, administering, or recommending non-FDA-approved "research-grade" peptides to patients is prohibited under Alabama law.
As peptides gain popularity on social media, patients are increasingly bringing online claims into exam rooms β€” but research-grade peptides are not approved for human use and are not subject to FDA oversight for safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing quality.

Memorial Day is a time to pause and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
As a community of physicians dedicated to serving others, the sacrifice of our fallen military is never lost on us β€” their courage is beyond measure.
From the JCMS family to yours, may today be one of meaningful reflection and gratitude.

Big news for Alabama medicine! The Medical Association of the State of Alabama has a new executive director. Vernon Barnett officially stepped into the role on May 19, bringing with him nearly a decade as Alabama's Revenue Commissioner and senior experience across multiple state agencies. He's on record saying he wants every physician in Alabama to know the organization is in their corner β€” on insurance issues, workforce challenges, reimbursement pressures, and more. We look forward to seeing what his leadership brings for our members and physicians statewide. Read the full announcement:

What an incredible visit to Southern Research!
As part of our Learn Something New series, JCMS had the privilege of touring the Southern Research facility in Birmingham, and we left inspired. The work they are doing in genomic science and cancer research is vital β€” not just for Alabama, but for patients everywhere. We are so grateful for their warm welcome and for the important work they do every day.
Did you know Southern Research offers free genetic testing through their Catalyst program? Your results are yours to keep, and genetic counselors are available to help you understand them.
