Y'all-- sometimes we fall off of social media due to a desire to only post if we've got the perfect post. Sometimes we jump right back on because we're so excited to see one of our favorite authors with a new Works in Progress paper! Go Maureen Walker!

Works In Progress Call For Papers: Works in Progress Relaunch! We’re thrilled to relaunch Works in Progress, the open-access series dedicated to advancing Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT). Sometimes people mistakenly believe that Relational-Cultural Theory means just being nice. Stifling any disagreement. But if you aren't disagreeing, it's likely not a fully authentic relationship. None of us agree on everything. Subordinating your own needs in order to placate someone else and preserve a relationship doesn't actually preserve a relationship, it preserves an appearance of connection. Sometimes it's necessary, or isn't worth the effort to engage in productive conflict, but if it's a relationship you care about, find ways to come out of hiding. RCT can help.

In Relational-Cultural Theory, we don't ignore the world outside the therapy office. RCT isn't value-neutral. Relational-Cultural Theory sees and names the damage of hierarchy, oppression, and hyper-individualism. We have to be able to see it, and name it, to heal from it.

Connection. Creativity. Collaboration. All necessary ingredients in the human experience. All things we tend to devalue.

In Toward A New Psychology Of Women, Jean Baker Miller described the essential nature of emotional connection, and then went on about the importance of creativity, writing:

"I refer to the absolute necessity of, and the absolute existence in human beings of, the potential for both cooperation and creativity. It is clear that the thwarting of these necessities, the blocking of these needs, produces as many or more problems than anything so far delineated."

It's easy to dismiss creative and connecting activities as leisure, or unnecessary-- things only to be indulged in once "real work" is complete. The reality is, we require room for creativity and connection in order to thrive, and we need to thrive in order to get stuff done. This is one of the reasons we make room for play and expressive arts at the BCC!

How can you welcome creativity and connection into your life?
