As estheticians, we look at ingredient labels differently. And there are a few drugstore cleansers you’ll never find in our routines.

1️⃣Anything with sodium lauryl sulfate. It strips the skin’s natural oils and compromises your moisture barrier over time. You feel squeaky clean. Your skin is actually depleted.

2️⃣ Cleansers with fragrance listed in the ingredients. Fragrance is one of the leading causes of contact dermatitis. It doesn’t matter if it smells like roses or nothing at all — if it’s on the label, it’s a potential irritant.

3️⃣ Scrub cleansers. St. Ives, we’re looking at you. Walnut shell and apricot particles create micro-tears in the skin. You’re not exfoliating — you’re causing low-grade damage every time you wash your face.

4️⃣ foaming cleansers marketed for oily skin that leave your face feeling tight. That tightness isn’t clean. That’s your skin barrier telling you something is wrong.

Clean doesn’t have a feeling. If your cleanser is doing its job, your skin should feel balanced — not tight, not greasy, just normal.
