You’ve probably heard of the Norwegian Method.
But what exactly is double-threshold training and why are elite distance runners using it?
The basic idea is simple: Accumulate a lot of quality work around lactate threshold without creating unnecessary fatigue.
Instead of treating every hard workout like a test, Norwegian-style training uses controlled threshold sessions, often split into shorter intervals and, for advanced athletes, sometimes two threshold sessions in the same day.
Why?
→ More threshold volume
→ Controlled lactate accumulation
→ Less fatigue than constantly running harder
→ More opportunities to develop the aerobic system
But here’s the important part: Double-threshold training isn't the secret ingredient for everyone.
It’s an advanced strategy that sits on top of a strong aerobic foundation. Most runners would benefit far more from consistent easy mileage, appropriate progression, and well-placed threshold work before worrying about two-a-day threshold sessions.
