"This is rare, you'll probably never see a patient with this" is what I was told in medical school when learning about vasculitis.

Little did I know I had already had my first flare of vasculitis 2 years prior to this and it went undiagnosed.

May 15 is International Vasculitis Day.

Vasculitis is a rare disease affecting 38-40 people per million yearly.

Vasculitis includes many conditions in which blood vessels become inflamed, affecting organs and quality of life. Early recognition of symptoms and prompt medical care are key.

After my first flare of vasculitis, I had no symptoms until 14 years later. It took several rounds of medication and trialing different immunosuppressants before getting my symptoms under control. It took 2 years after initial diagnosis to determine what type I have.
