There's currently a cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US. Cases have been seen in over 30 states and Michigan is the most impacted.

Cyclosporidium is a parasite that causes diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps and loss of appetite.

What am I doing to prevent infection in my home?
- avoid leafy greens and berries
- cook vegetables
- use other sources of fiber (such as lentils, quinoa, chickpeas) during the outbreak

If you think you're infected, contact your P*P. There is a test for it and effective treatment.

Working in the hospital, I often admitted patients to the hospital with high blood pressure or consequences of high blood pressure.

Most of these patients didn't know they had high blood pressure because there are no symptoms of it.

Regular screening is important and can prevent complications such as stroke, heart failure, heart attacks, and kidney disease.

"This is rare, you'll probably never see a patient with this" is what I was told in medical school when learning about vasculitis.

Little did I know I had already had my first flare of vasculitis 2 years prior to this and it went undiagnosed.

May 15 is International Vasculitis Day.

Vasculitis is a rare disease affecting 38-40 people per million yearly.

Vasculitis includes many conditions in which blood vessels become inflamed, affecting organs and quality of life. Early recognition of symptoms and prompt medical care are key.

After my first flare of vasculitis, I had no symptoms until 14 years later. It took several rounds of medication and trialing different immunosuppressants before getting my symptoms under control. It took 2 years after initial diagnosis to determine what type I have.
