Concussion Rehab 🧠

Unfortunately people still think the best way to recover from a concussion is to sit in a dark room. It is actually the EXACT OPPOSITE!

Other than engaging in high risk activity, I would argue that sitting in a dark room is the next worst thing to do.

Movement is medicine and exposure is king. The dosage and volume is a hige piece, very similar to orthopedic rehab.

If you're suffering from a conussion and don't know what to do, send me a message!

There is no such thing as a bad exercise 🏋‍♂️

Nearly any exercise can be modified to provide benefit to a multitude of different populations and presentations.

The circumstance, dosage, intensity, frequency, and progression matter much more than body type.

Don't get my wrong, prescribing "fascia-specific" exercise and giving clamshells to end-stage athletic ACLs is probably not providing the best juice for the squeeze. You should always ask "is there a better exercise for my intent?" Usually, a hinge, squat, push, and pull variation will always add benefit to a training program.

Check out a sample Perform Scorecard highlighting key metrics from our Athlete Performance Assessment 📝

Every athlete who enrolls in performance training through RPE at Diesel Sports Complex starts with an objective assessment using VALD Performance technology to establish a baseline, identify areas for improvement, and track progress over time.

Our physical therapy athletes utilize the same technology to objectively assess strength, power, asymmetries, and other performance metrics throughout rehabilitation and as part of the return-to-sport process.

Recover. Perform. Excel.

Have you been told to strengthen your core for your low back pain?

That's not a bad or incorrect recommendation but increasing the strength of your core is probably not the full picture for low back pain rehab.

Pain, especially chronic or recurrent low back pain, is multi-factoral and can be influenced by mobility, outside stressors, systemic inflammation (although I hate that term as a catch-all), overall capacity, workload, previous bouts of pain, diet, hydration, sleep, core strength, and much more.

Core strength exercises can help low back simply by being an introductory point to exercise for someone that has not exercised before - that, alone, is enough to influence low back pain.

3x10 is a great starting point for many, whether that be on the rehab side of the continuum or the training side.

Every individual should have an exercise prescription based on their needs and goals. 3x10 is often an appropriate starting point for many but needs to have some sort of progression/regression based on improvements and tolerance.

Don't feel bad for starting with the "generic" prescription. There's a reason it's so popular.

Ice isn't a magic recovery tool 🧊

There are specific instances when ice can be your friend but icing for "recovery" is misled.

In fact, I would recommend against an otherwise healthy athlete icing after every practice. Ice will help relieve pain but beware of what other issues you are masking and what that may lead to.

If you feel like you need to ice after every practice, take a look at your strength & conditioning program, load management strategies, and actual recovery modalities that move the needle.

If you need help assessing these, comment RECOVERY below and someone from our team will reach out to you.

Early sport specialization can potentially increase an athlete's chance of injury and may not be the best choice for complete athletic development.

While we cannot confidently say that athletes that specialize early have "worse" development, we have seen in the literature that specialization does NOT produce an advantage in mechanics or performance in adolescent athletes (Hamer et al., 2022; Camp et al., 2023).

My recommendation: participate in multiple sports and find a competent local sport performance facility for your total athlete development needs.
