Digital Pathology Association Encourages sharing of best practices & promotes use of the technology in order to demonstrate effici

Digital pathology is a dynamic, image-based environment that enables the acquisition, management and interpretation of pathology information generated from a digitized glass slide. Digital pathology is rapidly gaining momentum as a proven and essential technology that is helping to reduce laboratory expenses, improve operational efficiency, enhance productivity, and improve treatment decisions and patient care. It is used worldwide in drug development, reference lab, hospital, and academic medical center settings. Applications include education, research, image analysis, archival and retrieval, LIS/LIMS integration, secondary consultations, and virtual slide sharing.

From advances in open-source DICOM whole slide imaging viewers and enterprise digital pathology solutions to automated quality control for cytology slide digitization and artifact detection, speakers shared innovative approaches to improving image quality, streamlining workflows and supporting broader adoption.

These discussions reinforced the importance of reliable, scalable and interoperable solutions in moving digital pathology forward and ultimately improving patient care.

Sunday's Track 2 sessions at highlighted the power of innovation, accessibility and collaboration in advancing digital pathology!

From fast 3D MR histology for surgical tumor specimens and AI-powered diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis to resource-efficient whole slide imaging in low-resource settings, speakers explored new approaches to improving diagnostic capabilities. The afternoon also spotlighted the Open Pathology Education Network Initiative and UPMC's centralized model for fostering innovation and partnerships.

A great reminder that advancing digital pathology means not only developing new technologies, but also expanding access, sharing knowledge and building stronger connections across the global pathology community.

Today's session explored an important step toward broader adoption of digital pathology and AI: establishing sustainable reimbursement pathways.

Led by the DPA Reimbursement Task Force, the discussion highlighted progress in clinical validation, emerging CPT coding pathways and ongoing advocacy efforts with CMS to help move innovation into everyday clinical practice.
