What does supporting safer births have to do with breastfeeding? More than you might think.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, and it got us thinking about one of the more unexpected outcomes following the rollout of PeriWatch Vigilance at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Since implementation, the L&D unit has achieved sustained reductions in uterine tachysystole — dropping to less than 2% — along with earlier and more consistent intrauterine resuscitation, fewer unexpected NICU admissions, and more stable newborn transitions.

With fewer urgent separations and more immediate skin-to-skin contact, the team also observed an encouraging trend: higher exclusive breastfeeding rates.

While no single tool drives outcomes alone, it's a powerful reminder that when risks are identified early and addressed promptly, the benefits can extend well beyond the delivery room.

Our commitment to improving maternal and fetal health extends beyond our technology.

As part of our ongoing partnership with March of Dimes, members of their team recently joined for an afternoon centered around our shared commitment to mothers and babies. Together, we assembled care bags for families spending time in the UNC Children's - North Carolina Children's Hospital NICU.

The afternoon was a chance to step away from our day-to-day work, spend time together, and give back in a hands-on way to mothers, babies, and families in our own community. We’re grateful for a team that continues to show up for a mission we all care deeply about, both through the work we do every day and through opportunities to make a difference together.

Most of all, we hope these care bags brought a little extra comfort to the families who received them.

Every family deserves access to safe, high-quality maternity care, regardless of where they live.

A new report from March of Dimes highlights a growing crisis: 1 in 3 U.S. counties are now considered maternity care deserts, affecting 2.4 million women of reproductive age and 149,000 babies born each year.

The report also reveals that:
☑️ More than half of U.S. counties lack a hospital with labor and delivery services.
☑️ Rural communities continue to face severe provider shortages, with nearly 58% of rural counties lacking obstetric clinicians.
☑️ Recent labor and delivery unit closures are increasing travel times and creating additional barriers to timely care.

At PeriGen, we believe technology can help bridge critical gaps in maternity care.
